{"id":1956,"date":"2019-08-12T08:30:13","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T15:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/extensionweb\/?p=1956"},"modified":"2019-08-13T08:25:03","modified_gmt":"2019-08-13T15:25:03","slug":"focus-area-analytics-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/extensionweb\/2019\/08\/12\/focus-area-analytics-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Focus area analytics review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This spring, we launched a feature on the Extension website called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/extensionweb\/2019\/04\/23\/get-started-with-local-focus-areas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">focus areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d. These allow counties to highlight the work they do around a particular topic or topics, and were intended to serve as a link for visitors between the statewide educational content on topic pages and locally relevant events and programming on county pages. Now that focus areas have been live for a few months, we took a look at analytics to see how effective they have been in meeting the goals we had for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are the basic stats for focus area pages, for the period of March 20, 2019 &#8211; August 7, 2019:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pageviews: 3,655<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Average time on page: 1 min. 17 sec.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">% Entrances (views where it was the first page viewed on the site): 26.59%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">% Exits (views where it was the last page viewed on the site): 28.78%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">% New visitors: 61.53%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These stats (the low time on page, entrance, and exit rates) suggest that visitors are using focus area pages as a navigation tool on the way to the content they want to see. This is what we want to see. Additionally, the percentage of returning visitors to focus areas is significantly higher than for the site as a whole (38.47% vs. 13.12%).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is a graph showing how visitors get <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> focus areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1957\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2760\/files\/2019\/08\/previous-path-graph-300x191.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2760\/files\/2019\/08\/previous-path-graph-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2760\/files\/2019\/08\/previous-path-graph.png 603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A majority (~57%) of visitors to focus areas click on focus areas from a county page. Of those, around 35% do so on the county\u2019s landing page. The second most common way people get to focus areas is by searching on Google or another search engine, which makes up a majority of the \u201cEntrances\u201d in the graph above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On focus area pages, counties can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Select topics to direct visitors to and related experts to contact in their county.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">List programs and events offered in the county related to that topic.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Highlight individual pieces of educational content that are especially relevant to their county, such as newsletters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is a graph describing where people go <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">from<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> focus areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1958\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2760\/files\/2019\/08\/next-path-graph-300x174.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2760\/files\/2019\/08\/next-path-graph-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2760\/files\/2019\/08\/next-path-graph.png 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We see that 37.86% of visitors find content of interest and click to it from the focus area &#8211; if this type of information has been featured. Watch or read how to do this in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/osu-eesc.github.io\/cms-docs\/user-guide\/site\/content-types\/focus-area\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Website User Guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, here are the top 10 visited focus areas up to now:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/harec\/plant-pathology-diagnostic-laboratory-services\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HAREC Plant Pathology Diagnostic Laboratory Services<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/douglas\/home-garden-landscape\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Douglas County Home Garden and Landscape<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/benton\/forestry-natural-resources\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Benton County Forestry and Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/douglas\/forestry-natural-resources\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Douglas County Forestry and Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/deschutes\/home-garden-landscape-0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deschutes County Home Garden and Landscape<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/lane\/home-garden-landscape\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lane County Home Garden and Landscape<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/washington\/home-garden-landscape\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Washington County Home Garden and Landscape<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/lane\/forestry-natural-resources\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lane County Forestry and Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/nwrec\/berry-crops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NWREC Berry Crops<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/douglas\/livestock-forages\">Douglas County Livestock and Forages<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Ideas for improving county focus areas<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are some things you can do as a member of a county group to improve your county focus areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>If you offer services at your office, make sure to add them to the website. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of the more popular focus areas are those that give information about services for the public, such as laboratory services, pressure gage testing, and supplies for checkout.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Make sure to tag your county events with a topic.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Events are displayed on focus areas based on the topic(s) they are tagged with. Analytics show that a lot of visitors to focus areas are interested in the events listed there.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EESC will also use this data to make design and functionality improvements for focus areas, which may potentially include making them more visible on topic landing pages or linking to them from content pages themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Recent website updates<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>OSU recently updated the version of WordPress used for their blog platform. If you use an OSU WordPress site you will see some changes, including a new text editing interface called the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/gutenberg\/handbook\/contributors\/faq\/\">Gutenberg Editor<\/a>. Links to training instructions have been added to the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1SXCJK0TXZZomARffrmt5j8Wb5czePKYoG3gegFea9fI\/edit#\">OSU WordPress instructions<\/a>.
