Cooperating Teacher
Cooperating teachers play a vital role in preparing candidates to work effectively with English learners (ELs) and bilingual students throughout their careers in education. In this light, we ask cooperating teachers to do the following during the internship:
- provide opportunities for your internship student to immediately engage in regular classroom routines;³
- help answer their questions about the school and district, referring him/her to others as appropriate;
- encourage them to observe you teaching ELs and debrief that observation;
- discuss with them how you plan instructional units to meet the needs of ELs;
- encourage them to gain as much practice teaching ELs as possible;
- help them choose an appropriate language focus for the lessons in their Portfolio;
- observe them teaching ELs, including two Formal Observations [new];
- alert their university field supervisor and/or the ESOL endorsement program coordinator of areas of concern that may prohibit them from successfully completing the internship (see Dealing with Concerns);
- meet with their university field supervisor to collaboratively complete the Internship Team Evaluation;
- sign their log of internship hours when your internship student completes 90+ hours of field experience.
³ This item is only applicable to candidates completing hours in the cooperating teacher’s classroom, not to licensed teachers who are able to complete the full internship in their own class(es).
University Field Supervisor
University field supervisors observe endorsement candidates teaching at their internship sites. They gain valuable information from their observations and provide an important link between OSU and the internship site. They are expected to do the following during the internship:
- observe each candidate teaching ELs at least twice, using the ESOL Formal Observation form in Taskstream;²
- provide feedback for improving instruction in a constructive, encouraging, and respectful manner;
- serve as a positive role model and ambassador for OSU and our College of Education;
- respond to candidates’ emails and phone messages within 48 hours on school days;
- alert the ESOL endorsement program coordinator of unusual circumstances and/or areas of concern that may prohibit a candidate from successfully completing the internship (see Dealing with Concerns);
- meet with candidates’ cooperating teachers to collaboratively complete the Internship Team Evaluation, and input the evaluation in Taskstream;²
- Evaluate candidates’ Portfolio Approval and Release form in Taskstream to verify the Portfolio is based on an instructional unit the candidate taught.²
² Candidates are expected to submit their ESOL internship portfolio and related forms electronically through Taskstream. If you are unable to log-in to Taskstream, please contact Sharon Sánchez-Aragón at sharon.sanchez-aragon@oregonstate.edu or 541-737-0085.
