Ford Deanship of Forestry and Director of the Oregon Forest Research Laboratory effective August 1, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Maness is professor of Forest Economics and Policy and Head of the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management at Oregon State University\u2019s College of Forestry.\u00a0 He is responsible for the professional forest management and engineering degree programs. Since joining OSU in 2009, he has spearheaded the development of the College\u2019s new Professional School and Conservation Management Program.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Maness earned his Bachelor\u2019s degree in Forest Management from West Virginia University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1979.\u00a0 He earned his MS in Forest Operations at Virginia Tech in 1981, and afterwards worked for Weyerhaeuser Company where he served as a forest engineer in the Klamath Falls region, developed strategic forest-planning models in corporate R&amp;D, designed and installed advanced manufacturing optimization systems for west coast sawmills, and conducted financial analysis for large-scale capital projects.\u00a0 In 1989 Thomas earned his doctorate in Forest Economics from the University of Washington and joined the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to leading the College of Forestry, Dr. Maness will work\u00a0 in collaboration with the Deans of Agricultural Sciences and Earth, Ocean &amp; Atmospheric Sciences to advance the science of sustainable Earth ecosystems as part of the Division of Earth Systems Science.<\/p>\n<p>Please join me in congratulating Dr. Maness on his new role, and again acknowledging Dr. Hal Salwasser for his many years of excellence in leadership as Dean of Forestry.
