Greetings science communication enthusiasts and advocates,<\/div>\n

We\u2019re excited to announce that applications are now open for the spring cohort of the OMSI\u00a0<\/span>Science Communication Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>program. In partnership with Oregon State University (OSU), the Spring 2019 Cohort will be held primarily in Corvallis, OR on the OSU campus.\u00a0 We\u2019ve worked closely with OSU leadership to create a few pages on their website about our program and partnership here:https:\/\/www.science.oregonstate.edu\/omsi-partnership<\/a><\/div>\n

Additionally, we will be at OSU to host an informational brownbag next\u00a0<\/span>Thursday, October 11th<\/sup>\u00a0<\/span>from 12-1pm in LPSC 402<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

We would love your help spreading the word this upcoming cohort and the brownbag session.\u00a0 \u00a0Please pass on the below text (and attached flyer) to any interested colleagues at OSU.\u00a0 For those of you outside of OSU, we will return to OMSI to host our summer and fall cohorts next year.<\/div>\n

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) has a program, the\u00a0<\/span>OMSI Science Communication Fellowship<\/i><\/a>, that I wanted to let you know about. OMSI Science Communication Fellows are researchers or science professionals including faculty, graduate students, technicians, or other individuals in science, engineering, health, or technology related positions. OMSI Fellows participate in a series of professional development workshops that cover science communication best practices and provide opportunities for participants to practice new skills and techniques. In collaboration with OMSI, each Fellow will develop a unique hands-on educational activity designed to communicate their research to public audiences and will join OMSI in engaging museum visitors with these activities at\u00a0<\/span>Meet a Scientist<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>events.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

The OMSI team will be at OSU to host an informational brownbag on the Fellowship program nextThursday, October 11th<\/sup>\u00a0<\/span>from 12-1pm in LPSC 402<\/b>. Please come meet the OMSI team and learn more about the program!<\/div>\n

Application Deadline & Workshop Schedule<\/b><\/div>\n

Workshop 3: Thursday, April 11, 1-4pm (at OSU)<\/div>\n
Workshop 4: Saturday, April 27, 1-5pm (held in Portland, OR at OMSI)<\/div>\n

Tuition & Scholarship Information<\/b><\/div>\n
Tuition for the program is $1,850 per participant. A limited number of scholarships are available for this cohort:<\/div>\n

College of Science Tuition Scholarship<\/b><\/div>\n
Eligibility: Professionals (including researchers, faculty, students, etc.) in the College of Science at OSU. This scholarship is possible through the generosity of OSU College of Science donors.<\/div>\n
Scholarship Amount: $925<\/div>\n

Securing Funding\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
We invite all interested applicants to apply\u00a0<\/span>even if you have not yet found funding<\/i>.\u00a0 OSU is committed to helping as many students and faculty as possible participate in this opportunity. OMSI can assist in initiating conversations to find funding through your department, college, or advisor.\u00a0 We are happy to provide information on the Fellowship, including a recent evaluation report on our program documenting the impacts on the STEM professionals participating in the OMSI Fellowship. Please reach out to\u00a0<\/span>Amanda Fisher<\/a>, Senior Science Communication Specialist, to request support.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n
Broader Impacts<\/b><\/div>\n
Many of the participants in the Fellowship program secure their tuition through broader impacts or education and outreach components of current research grants.\u00a0 If you’d like help to secure funding for participation in a future cohort, please reach out to us.\u00a0 We often work with researchers to incorporate the Fellowship into broader impact plans within NSF grant proposals. If you are interested in pursuing this option, or would like to invite us to facilitate an info session with your lab group or department on broader impact proposal collaborations, please get in touch with Amanda directly.\u00a0 Her email isafisher@omsi.edu<\/a>, and direct line is\u00a0<\/span>503-797-4635<\/a>.\u00a0 We expect to run 2-3 cohorts per year (with one cohort per year at OSU) so there are many opportunities to get involved.<\/div>\n
