{"id":4586,"date":"2018-01-02T10:37:19","date_gmt":"2018-01-02T17:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/?p=4586"},"modified":"2018-01-02T10:37:19","modified_gmt":"2018-01-02T17:37:19","slug":"osu-postdoctoral-programs-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/2018\/01\/02\/osu-postdoctoral-programs-update\/","title":{"rendered":"OSU Postdoctoral Programs Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"783\">OSU will be prepared to re-institute the postdoctoral scholar program, which was voted into law through <a href=\"https:\/\/olis.leg.state.or.us\/liz\/2017R1\/Downloads\/MeasureDocument\/SB214\">SB\u00a0 214<\/a>, effective January 1, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify, a postdoctoral scholar must be participating in a formal, mentored faculty research program; follow a formal, written mentorship program developed by an OSU research mentor and on file with the OSU Graduate School; and begin their employment on or after January 1, 2018. Current postdoctoral fellows, postdoctoral scholars, nor faculty research associates are not eligible for the new postdoctoral scholars program. One of the requirements of SB214 was the creation of an alternative retirement plan for postdoctoral scholars within the ORP.\u00a0\u00a0 We are pleased to announce the creation of that alternative retirement plan.<\/p>\n<p>To establish a new <a href=\"http:\/\/gradschool.oregonstate.edu\/postdocs\">postdoctoral scholar<\/a> to begin on January 1, 2018 or later, please refer to the following guidelines:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No formal <a href=\"http:\/\/gradschool.oregonstate.edu\/postdocs\/appointment-and-recruitment\">recruitment process<\/a> is required for postdoctoral scholars.\u00a0 Hiring officials are encouraged to send announcements of open positions to Maureen Childers in the Graduate School for <a href=\"http:\/\/gradschool.oregonstate.edu\/postdocs\/open-positions\">posting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A written <a href=\"http:\/\/hr.oregonstate.edu\/main\/documents\/postdoctoral-scholar-letter-offer-and-notice-appointment\">initial notice<\/a> must be provided to the postdoctoral scholar.\u00a0 When signed by all parties the letter constitutes an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 The new postdoctoral scholar letter will be updated by October 27, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/admin\/hristeam\/PostdoctoralScholar.pdf\">postdoctoral scholar \u201cjob form\u201d<\/a> seats the scholar in in OSU\u2019s systems.\u00a0 Instructions for the job form are located <a href=\"https:\/\/oscar.oregonstate.edu\/Resources\/info.aspx?HelpKey=1632\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A written mentorship program developed by an <a href=\"http:\/\/gradschool.oregonstate.edu\/postdocs\/mentor-responsibilities\">OSU research mentor<\/a> must be on file with the OSU Graduate School.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Mentors are encouraged to review the six <a href=\"http:\/\/c.ymcdn.com\/sites\/www.nationalpostdoc.org\/resource\/resmgr\/Docs\/Core_Competencies_-_10.02.13.pdf\">Core Competencies<\/a> for postdoctoral scholars established by the National Postdoctoral Association.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 To support a successful postdoctoral scholar mentee relationship with their mentor, an <a href=\"http:\/\/gradschool.oregonstate.edu\/postdocs\/individual-development-plan\">Individual Development Plan (IDP)<\/a> serves as a communication tool.\u00a0 The IDP must be submitted to the Graduate School for approval before the end of the postdoctoral scholar\u2019s third month.<\/p>\n<p>For budgeting purposes on sponsored projects, please use the following guidelines:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 OPE (fringe benefit costs) should be calculated at 14%.\u00a0 10% covers social security, worker\u2019s compensation, etc., and 4% covers the contributions to the retirement plan.\u00a0 The retirement coverage (and deduction) begins after the first six month of their appointment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For health insurance, coverage will be obtained through Student Health Services.\u00a0 Depending on the coverage, the cost varies.\u00a0 For a postdoctoral scholar and spouse\/partner, an estimate of $500\/month should be used.<\/p>\n<p>More information on pay rates and benefits can be found at:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gradschool.oregonstate.edu\/postdocs\/stipends-and-benefits\">http:\/\/gradschool.oregonstate.edu\/postdocs\/stipends-and-benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Passage of SB214 was a collaborative effort among Oregon State University, University of Oregon, Portland State University, and Oregon Health &amp; Science University.
