{"id":4421,"date":"2017-10-04T13:54:45","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T20:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/?p=4421"},"modified":"2017-10-04T13:54:45","modified_gmt":"2017-10-04T20:54:45","slug":"great-oregon-shake-earthquake-preparedness-learning-sessions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/2017\/10\/04\/great-oregon-shake-earthquake-preparedness-learning-sessions\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Oregon Shake Out &#8211; Earthquake Preparedness Learning Sessions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Join other OSU faculty, staff, and students in the Great Oregon Shake Out!<\/p>\n<p>On October 19 at 10:19 am, join the rest of Oregon and the nation and Drop, Cover, and Hold-On for 60 seconds to simulate the response to an earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>Participation is voluntary but encouraged.\u00a0 In previous years, several campus classes and organizations have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Made participation a small group class project, to include a 5 minute research presentation<\/li>\n<li>Made a class project to have students, wherever they are, encourage those around them to Drop, Cover, Hold-On (proof provided by videotaping the activity)<\/li>\n<li>Prepared informational materials and distribute to staff\/faculty\/classmates<\/li>\n<li>Planned an evacuation drill to high ground near Hatfield due to the tsunami threat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of the monthly OSU Emergency Preparedness Learning sessions, October\u2019s fact sheet will review the response to earthquakes and other preparedness points \u2013 Great talking tips to present on 10\/20, right before the Drop, Cover, and Hold-On event!<\/p>\n<p>There will be a PowerPoint sent on Monday, October 17 that can be used in offices and classrooms to introduce the earthquake drill.\u00a0 It even has a 60 second timer to help with how long to run the drill.<\/p>\n<p>If you do participate, please complete our Qualtrics Survey<a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_2of1ZBgMQGATFrv\">http:\/\/oregonstate.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_2of1ZBgMQGATFrv<\/a> or send a count of participants to OSU Emergency Preparedness (<a href=\"mailto:emergency@oregonstate.edu\">emergency@oregonstate.edu<\/a>) so we can update the OSU participation tally on the Shake Out website.<\/p>\n<p>Additional information about the Shake Out can be found at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/emergency.oregonstate.edu\/oregon-shake-out\">http:\/\/emergency.oregonstate.edu\/oregon-shake-out<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/shakeout.org\/oregon\/\">http:\/\/shakeout.org\/oregon\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Background:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Oregon is subjected to earthquakes <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/map\/\">daily<\/a>, but the largest event forecasted has yet to occur within our lifetime.\u00a0 The Cascadia Subduction zone earthquake is forecasted to be a 9.0 or higher and to last for 5-7 minutes, followed by a 30-50 foot tsunami at the coast.<\/p>\n<p>Response to earthquakes is simple but important for everyone to perform correctly and automatically.\u00a0 When the shaking is felt, drop low to the ground, seek overhead cover to protect yourself from falling debris, and hold on to the cover so it does not move away from you.\u00a0 When the shaking has stopped, cautiously exit the building, watching for falling objects.<\/p>\n<p>For more Cascadia Subduction Zone and earthquake information, please refer to these summary websites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.commdiginews.com\/environment\/massive-earthquake-threatens-pacific-northwest-12492\/\">http:\/\/www.commdiginews.com\/environment\/massive-earthquake-threatens-pacific-northwest-12492\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/geology.about.com\/od\/quake_preparedness\/a\/aa_cascadiaEQ.htm\">http:\/\/geology.about.com\/od\/quake_preparedness\/a\/aa_cascadiaEQ.htm<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crew.org\/earthquake-information\/history-of-earthquakes-in-cascadia\">http:\/\/www.crew.org\/earthquake-information\/history-of-earthquakes-in-cascadia<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thank you,<\/p>\n<p>Mike Bamberger<\/p>\n<p>Emergency Preparedness Manager<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Join other OSU faculty, staff, and students in the Great Oregon Shake Out!
