{"id":3943,"date":"2016-05-20T14:00:49","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T21:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/?p=3943"},"modified":"2016-11-15T17:48:17","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T00:48:17","slug":"undergraduate-quarter-spring-2016-dang-nguyen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/2016\/05\/20\/undergraduate-quarter-spring-2016-dang-nguyen\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate of the Quarter &#8211; Spring 2016 &#8211; Dang Nguyen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/files\/2016\/11\/Dang-Nguyen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3944 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/files\/2016\/11\/Dang-Nguyen-189x300.jpg\" alt=\"dang-nguyen\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Dang-Nguyen-189x300.jpg 189w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Dang-Nguyen-768x1222.jpg 768w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Dang-Nguyen-644x1024.jpg 644w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Dang-Nguyen-400x636.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Dang-Nguyen.jpg 1790w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dang Nguyen has been named one of our Spring 2016 Undergraduates of the Quarter and we couldn\u2019t be happier for him.\u00a0 Dang was born in Colorado, but his parents moved to Portland when he was three-years-old, so he considers himself an Oregonian.\u00a0 He attended Clackamas High School where he was first exposed to Chemistry by his OSU Alumni Chemistry Teacher, Mr. Sytsma.<\/p>\n<p>Being one of the best engineering schools in the country and fairly close to home, OSU quickly became the clear choice for him however, during his freshman year, everything changed.\u00a0 Dang commented on one of the turning points in his life, speaking about Dr. Richard Nafshun, who was his General Chemistry at the time.\u00a0 \u201cHe has a teaching style that made me want to learn more about chemistry.\u00a0 The more chemistry I took, the more I enjoyed it; so, I switched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dang has been doing undergraduate research with Maduka Ogba in Professor Paul Cheong\u2019s lab for almost two years.\u00a0 He said they were working on non-classical hydrogen bonding research using computational chemistry, something he found very interesting.\u00a0 At the end of the academic year, they were working on a manuscript that Dang is hoping will reach publication.<\/p>\n<p>He was unable to list just one favorite instructor, but was pretty adamant that his favorite class was experimental chemistry.\u00a0 \u201cExperimental chemistry is more of an application and hands-on experience.
