The 2015 National Chemistry Week theme is “Chemistry Colors Our World”. The American Chemical Society is celebrating Chemistry Week to increase awareness for Chemistry. Dr. Mas Subramanian’s research focuses on colorful materials, so he made a graphic featuring his pigment to help the NSF promote Chemistry.

The American Chemical Society’s Division of Organic Chemistry is pleased to sponsor a new award program called the Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry, that is intended to recognize senior students who display a significant aptitude for organic chemistry and to encourage further interest in the field.
The award: Consists of a letter of recognition from the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry and an award certificate signed by the division chair. Awardees who are members of the American Chemical Society will also receive membership to the Division of Organic Chemistry; those who are not will receive Affiliate status. Division Affiliates have all of the benefits of membership in the division with the exception of voting and serving on committees. Nominations: Chemistry departments are invited to select a top graduating senior student majoring in either chemistry or biochemistry who has demonstrated excellence in organic chemistry based on a combination of research experience, coursework and a desire to pursue a career in chemistry. The student should also be enrolled at your institution for the 2013-2014 academic year. To nominate a student, the Department Chair or the Chair of the Department Awards Committee (or similar), should complete the online form available at: http://organicdivision.org/uga by March 15th.* Please note that only one student per U.S. institution can be nominated per academic year. While we plan to send you the official award items by April 30th, once the form is submitted, you are welcome to immediately recognize the student as you deem appropriate.

The 2013 Linus Pauling Award Symposium guest lecturer will be Chad A. Mirkin, PhD. He is the Director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology (IIN) as well as the George B Rathmann Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
In addition to being showered with accolades from Hollywood insiders, this year’sEmmy Award-winner for best television drama, “Breaking Bad,” has been alsopraised by members of the scientific community.
“To us who are educated in science, whenever we see science presented inaccurately, it’s like fingernails on the blackboard,” the AMC show’s science advisor Dr. Donna Nelson, a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Oklahoma, tells the American Chemical Society’s Bytesize Science series in the video above. “It just drives us crazy, and we can’t stay immersed in the show.”
Fortunately for Nelson and like-minded scientists, “Breaking Bad” gets the science mostly right in its tale of chemistry-teacher-turned-meth-overlord Walter White.
Nelson actually works with the show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, to fact-check scripts. She even suggests chemical structures for Walter to draw on his blackboard.
But Nelson did identify one glaring inaccuracy.
“The powder blue meth that you see is really sort of like Walter’s trademark,” Nelson explains in the video. “In real life, meth would not be powder blue like that. The meth would be colorless.”
The show’s series finale will run on AMC this Sunday.

ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable is seeking a 1-year R&D commitment focused on developing greener and safer methods, reagents, or engineering solutions (such as flow chemistry) for the selective fluorination of pharmaceutically relevant organic molecules. Proposals are invited from public and private institutions of higher education worldwide. One grant is planned to be awarded and the total award is limited to $50,000 for a grant period of 12 months. Deadline for receipt of proposals is August 21, 2013 at 5 pm EDT (GMT-4).
ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable is seeking a 1-2 year R&D commitment to target identification and development of Non-Precious Metal Catalysis alternatives for widely employed Transition Metal catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, with a focus on substrates that are widely applicable to the pharmaceutical industry. Proposals are invited from public and private institutions of higher education worldwide. This project is intended for a student within the selected Principal Investigator’s research group. One grant is planned to be awarded and the total award is limited to $100,000 for a grant period of 1-2 years. Deadline for receipt of proposals is August 21, 2013 at 5 pm EDT (GMT-4).

American Chemical Society (ACS)
While the ACS Petroleum Research Fund does not have a specific category of green chemistry research, several green chemistry projects have been supported by PRF. The program welcomes applicants with high quality fundamental research in the petroleum or fossil fuels fields which may have a “green” focus.
