Position Description

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is seeking an innovative leader to serve as Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.  Research activities in the Department reflect all major areas of chemistry, and faculty receive extramural funding from federal and state programs, private foundations and industry. The successful candidate is expected to be an active leader and researcher who has a strong vision for developing and strengthening educational and research initiatives.  Applicants must have a distinguished record of scientific achievement, demonstrated leadership skills, and a commitment to the education and mentorship of both students and faculty. Candidates should have relevant administrative experience and an understanding of key issues affecting faculty recruitment, promotion and retention. The Department is especially interested in candidates who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

 

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry (or Biochemistry with Chemistry emphasis)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Excellent management skills
  • Distinguished record of research and teaching
  • Current academic rank of tenured associate or full professor (or equivalent non-US rank)

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) has a program, the OMSI Science Communication Fellowship, that I wanted to let you know about. OMSI Science Communication Fellows are researchers or science professionals including faculty, graduate students, technicians, or other individuals in science, engineering, health, or technology related positions. OMSI Fellows participate in a series of professional development workshops that cover science communication best practices and provide opportunities for participants to practice new skills and techniques. In collaboration with OMSI, each Fellow will develop a unique hands-on educational activity designed to communicate their research to public audiences and will join OMSI in engaging museum visitors with these activities at Meet a Scientist events. 
The OMSI team will be at OSU to host an informational brownbag on the Fellowship program nextThursday, October 11th from 12-1pm in LPSC 402. Please come meet the OMSI team and learn more about the program!

Tuition & Scholarship Information
Tuition for the program is $1,850 per participant. A limited number of scholarships are available for this cohort:
College of Science Tuition Scholarship
Eligibility: Professionals (including researchers, faculty, students, etc.) in the College of Science at OSU. This scholarship is possible through the generosity of OSU College of Science donors.
Scholarship Amount: $925
Securing Funding 
We invite all interested applicants to apply even if you have not yet found funding.  OSU is committed to helping as many students and faculty as possible participate in this opportunity. OMSI can assist in initiating conversations to find funding through your department, college, or advisor.  We are happy to provide information on the Fellowship, including a recent evaluation report on our program documenting the impacts on the STEM professionals participating in the OMSI Fellowship. Broader Impacts
Many of the participants in the Fellowship program secure their tuition through broader impacts or education and outreach components of current research grants.  If you’d like help to secure funding for participation in a future cohort, please reach out to us.  We often work with researchers to incorporate the Fellowship into broader impact plans within NSF grant proposals. If you are interested in pursuing this option, or would like to invite us to facilitate an info session with your lab group or department on broader impact proposal collaborations, please get in touch with Amanda directly.  Her email isafisher@omsi.edu, and direct line is 503-797-4635.  We expect to run 2-3 cohorts per year (with one cohort per year at OSU) so there are many opportunities to get involved.

The Department of Defense (DoD) SMART Scholarship Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in STEM disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed by the Department of Defense upon degree completion.

SMART Scholars will receive:

  • A full tuition scholarship while in school
  • An annual stipend
  • Summer research internships
  • A job after graduating in their STEM field at a cutting edge Department of Defense Facility

The Office of Human Resources is partnering with Fred Meyer Pharmacies to provide flu shot clinics for employees this year.

Dates/Location:

  • October 4th, Thursday, in the MU Ballroom
  • October 11th, Thursday, in the MU 109

Times (both dates): 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On the day of the clinic:

  • Bring your insurance card and photo ID (for billing).
  • Wear short sleeves.
  • Plan on staying for five minutes after receiving the vaccination (water and snacks will be available while you wait).
  • If paying at the time of service, payment by check will be the only form of payment accepted (see cost below).

Cost of vaccination:

  • Fred Meyer Pharmacies will bill your insurance plans.
    • PEBB Statewide (Providence), Providence Choice and Moda plans will cover the cost of the flu vaccinations.
    • Employees with Kaiser insurance: The Office of Human Resources is verifying with Kaiser if they will pay for the vaccination if it is received at the OSU flu shot clinic.
    • Employees with other insurance coverage (e.g., another employer plan, OHP): Fred Meyer Pharmacies will bill that insurance company. Please verify with your insurance provider if the flu vaccination is covered.
  • If you are paying at time of the clinic, the cost is $25.

SCI Scholars is now accepting applications for its prestigious summer 2019 industrial internships. SCI Scholars is open to chemistry and chemical engineering majors who are current sophomore or juniors, US citizens or permanent residents with at least 3.5 (out of 4.0) cumulative GPA. Some positions have additional requirements.

Selected candidates will receive:

  • $6,000-$10,000+ stipend, depending on the internship
  • Certificate of recognition
  • $1,000 professional development stipend
  • Opportunity to nominate an inspiring high school chemistry teacher for recognition. Teachers will be awarded a certificate and $1,000 to support their curriculum.

The Renewable Energy Scholarship Foundation is now soliciting applications for the scholarships to be given in 2019. The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at The University of Alabama seeks an outstanding
individual with expertise in inorganic chemistry to fill a tenure track position at the Assistant
Professor rank beginning August 16, 2019. Alternatively, outstanding individuals with prior

Tuesday Teaching Talks 2018-2019

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is accepting applications for the 2019 Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs. Eligibility and online application information are available on the Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs website.

Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • U. S. citizens, U.S. nationals, U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), as well as individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) program¹, political asylees, and refugees, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation
  • Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations), and
  • Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level in a research-based field of science, social science, or humanities

1Eligibility includes individuals with current status under the DACA Program, as well as individuals whose status may have lapsed but who continue to meet all the USCIS guidelines for DACA available here.

Stipends:

  • Predoctoral–$24,000 per year for three years
  • Dissertation–$25,000 for one year
  • Postdoctoral–$45,000 for one year

Awardees will have expenses paid to attend at least one Conference of Ford Fellows. Approximately 70 predoctoral, 36 dissertation, and 24 postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded.
