The fourth annual Portland American Chemical Society Undergraduate Poster Symposium and Career Fair will be held on Sunday, October 22, at the SRTC Building at Portland State University, from 4-7 PM.  We hope to have 40 or more undergraduates presenting posters about their summer research; there will be free pizza and pastries (and other food and drink).

There will be $150 first prizes and possibly $75 second prizes in each of seven divisions (Organic, Inorganic, Analytical, Physical, Biochemistry, Polymers, Materials).  Note that the chances of winning a prize are pretty high!

We anticipate that representatives of many local companies and graduate schools will be present; the schedule is designed to allow plenty of time for the students to leave their posters and interact with the recruiters and other students.

I am writing to seek your help in getting this information to every undergraduate attending a school in the Portland or Oregon ACS sections who did chemistry-related research during the summer of 2017.  No one knows this better than the faculty.  Please forward this to your colleagues, and through them (or directly) to appropriate students; in addition to those who did research on campus last summer, please try to remember those who did research somewhere else.  Company and national lab internships count, as long as the students are able to divulge their results, and researchers from other departments are also welcome, as long as there is some connection to chemistry.  The results need not be high impact—we understand that some projects do not work as expected, but one can still make good posters about them.

There is no selection process for this event—any student registering may present.  Full information, including registration instructions, can be found at the following web site: https://sites.google.com/site/portlandacsposters/home.  However, we do not want a bunch of no-shows—registration should constitute a good-faith commitment to attend and present.

Deadline for registration is October 10.  We need some lead time to prepare the booklet.  To encourage early submission, there will be a $10 prize for the first 5 students who register!

Assistant Professor Positions in Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry at New College of Florida
New College of Florida invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in
Organic Chemistry and a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Bioorganic Chemistry,
both starting in August 2018. A Ph.D. in chemistry is required for both positions. The successful
candidates must be committed to excellence in teaching and research. Teaching experience
and postdoctoral research experience are strongly preferred. New College is committed to
recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty. Women and candidates from underrepresented groups
or whose knowledge or skills can support an inclusive culture and learning environment are
especially encouraged to apply.
The teaching load is two courses per semester plus sponsoring individual and group tutorials. In
addition to classes and tutorials, faculty members provide academic advising, supervise
independent study projects, sponsor senior undergraduate theses/projects, and serve on
baccalaureate committees. We are particularly interested in candidates who have a
demonstrated commitment to innovative undergraduate liberal arts teaching. The successful
candidates are expected to establish and maintain a program of research. New College
welcomes research programs that complement those of the current faculty.
Situated on the Gulf Coast of Florida and Sarasota Bay, New College is a nationally recognized,
highly-selective public honors college with an 11:1 student/faculty ratio. Students are
intellectually independent and highly motivated. Undergraduate research has a central role in
the curriculum, and a senior thesis/project is required of all students. Students receive narrative
evaluations in lieu of grades. New College is committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching
and research and encourages collaborative student-faculty scholarship. www.ncf.edu. A
description of the Division of Natural Sciences is at
https://www.ncf.edu/academics/undergraduate-program/division-of-natural-sciences/.
A complete application will include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, the names of three
references (including at least one who can address teaching), unofficial graduate transcripts, a
statement of teaching philosophy that includes course proposals, a statement regarding the
candidate’s contributions or approaches to supporting an inclusive culture and learning
environment, and a description of proposed research that specifically highlights how
undergraduates would participate. Review of completed applications will begin October 2 and
continue until the position is filled. According to Florida law, applications and meetings regarding
applications are open to the public upon request. An online application:
