The fourth annual Portland American Chemical Society Undergraduate Poster Symposium and Career Fair will be held on Sunday, October 22, at the SRTC Building at Portland State University, from 4-7 PM.  We hope to have 40 or more undergraduates presenting posters about their summer research; there will be free pizza and pastries (and other food and drink).

There will be $150 first prizes and possibly $75 second prizes in each of seven divisions (Organic, Inorganic, Analytical, Physical, Biochemistry, Polymers, Materials).  Note that the chances of winning a prize are pretty high!

We anticipate that representatives of many local companies and graduate schools will be present; the schedule is designed to allow plenty of time for the students to leave their posters and interact with the recruiters and other students.

I am writing to seek your help in getting this information to every undergraduate attending a school in the Portland or Oregon ACS sections who did chemistry-related research during the summer of 2017.  No one knows this better than the faculty.  Please forward this to your colleagues, and through them (or directly) to appropriate students; in addition to those who did research on campus last summer, please try to remember those who did research somewhere else.  Company and national lab internships count, as long as the students are able to divulge their results, and researchers from other departments are also welcome, as long as there is some connection to chemistry.  The results need not be high impact—we understand that some projects do not work as expected, but one can still make good posters about them.

There is no selection process for this event—any student registering may present.  Full information, including registration instructions, can be found at the following web site: https://sites.google.com/site/portlandacsposters/home.  However, we do not want a bunch of no-shows—registration should constitute a good-faith commitment to attend and present.

Deadline for registration is October 10.  We need some lead time to prepare the booklet.  To encourage early submission, there will be a $10 prize for the first 5 students who register!

Cheers,

Dave Reingold

2017 Flyer

Dear Oregon State University chemistry/biochemistry faculty,

I’m writing to let you know we are running our Pfizer Academic-Industrial Relations Diversity fellowship program again, for the 2017 – 2018 academic year.  The program is essentially the same as last year. We are looking for enthusiastic undergraduates from historically under-represented ethnic groups to participate in this research fellowship program.  We are asking for your help in identifying these individuals from your own research groups and undergraduate classes.  The same requirements and qualifications apply.  This is a $15K fellowship divided into $12K for the student stipend and $3000 that may be used for lab and travel costs.  The student is required to write a report of his/her progress in January 2018 and will be invited to present his/her research at the La Jolla site at the end of the 2018 summer.  Application deadline is October 23th, 2017.

The research areas of interest that we will consider funding include organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, computational chemistry, crystallography and structural/chemical biology.

Attached is a cover letter describing the program in more detail along with a copy of the application and a flyer to post around the department. Please also feel free to circulate to other interested colleagues/students. I can also provide former example applications if students need an idea of what we are looking for in a successful application.

We look forward to hearing from you and some excellent Oregon State University undergraduate students.  Thank you also in advance for your help in making this program a success. Feel free to contact me if you need more information.

Sincerely,

Eric

Join other OSU faculty, staff, and students in the Great Oregon Shake Out!

On October 19 at 10:19 am, join the rest of Oregon and the nation and Drop, Cover, and Hold-On for 60 seconds to simulate the response to an earthquake.

Participation is voluntary but encouraged.  In previous years, several campus classes and organizations have:

  • Made participation a small group class project, to include a 5 minute research presentation
  • Made a class project to have students, wherever they are, encourage those around them to Drop, Cover, Hold-On (proof provided by videotaping the activity)
  • Prepared informational materials and distribute to staff/faculty/classmates
  • Planned an evacuation drill to high ground near Hatfield due to the tsunami threat

As part of the monthly OSU Emergency Preparedness Learning sessions, October’s fact sheet will review the response to earthquakes and other preparedness points – Great talking tips to present on 10/20, right before the Drop, Cover, and Hold-On event!

There will be a PowerPoint sent on Monday, October 17 that can be used in offices and classrooms to introduce the earthquake drill.  It even has a 60 second timer to help with how long to run the drill.

If you do participate, please complete our Qualtrics Surveyhttp://oregonstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2of1ZBgMQGATFrv or send a count of participants to OSU Emergency Preparedness (emergency@oregonstate.edu) so we can update the OSU participation tally on the Shake Out website.

Additional information about the Shake Out can be found at:

Background:

Oregon is subjected to earthquakes daily, but the largest event forecasted has yet to occur within our lifetime.  The Cascadia Subduction zone earthquake is forecasted to be a 9.0 or higher and to last for 5-7 minutes, followed by a 30-50 foot tsunami at the coast.

Response to earthquakes is simple but important for everyone to perform correctly and automatically.  When the shaking is felt, drop low to the ground, seek overhead cover to protect yourself from falling debris, and hold on to the cover so it does not move away from you.  When the shaking has stopped, cautiously exit the building, watching for falling objects.

For more Cascadia Subduction Zone and earthquake information, please refer to these summary websites:

Thank you,

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics or a closely related field. Successful candidates will be expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate level and work closely with the existing interdisciplinary programs in the Academy of Integrated Science. Applications must be submitted online at https://listings.jobs.vt.edu/postings/80232 (posting number TR0170134) and should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy that describes an integrated vision for interdisciplinary science education, a description of previous activities mentoring minorities, women, or members of other underrepresented groups as well as how the applicant will further Virginia Tech’s commitment to build a culturally diverse educational environment, and contact information for three references. The review of applications will begin on January 15, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. As part of the hiring process, the successful applicant must pass a criminal background check.
