I am contacting you to inform you of a wonderful opportunity for your undergraduate students. Portland State University’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program has been a successful NSF-funded training program since its advent in 2001.This REU program, which includes a wide range of scientific departments, includes instruction on SEM and FIB microscopes and eight weeks of paid lab work alongside one of PSU’s professors. It takes place over the summer, from June 18, 2018 to August 10, 2018.

The application on our website has just recently opened, and will remain open until March 5, 2018. This program has an emphasis on women, minorities, veterans, and nontraditional students, though all applicants will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

About ONAMI Graduate Internships in Startups:

ONAMI Graduate Internships in Startups (GIST) Program:  ONAMI will fund internships for qualified grad students or recent graduates at ONAMI portfolio companies for 6-9 months.  This is a great opportunity for a student to determine if the startup environment is an attractive career option. Experience to date has proven the internships beneficial to both company and student.

When a match is found (this is determined by the student and company), ONAMI will enter into an agreement with the company, and the student will become a company employee or contractor.  ONAMI will fund the internship at the rate of $25/hour, paid to the company.  The company will provide the intern with salary (at least $25/hour), supervision, training, materials and mentorship.   (Any additional compensation or benefits are the option of the company.)  ONAMI will fund the company up front for half of the internship.  Brief (non-confidential) monthly reports from the student, as well as a mid-term review by both company and student will determine if the internship will proceed. At that point, ONAMI will fund the remainder of the internship.

About the Program

Each Chemistry Summer Research Fellow will receive a stipend of approximately $7400 to perform research over 10 weeks under direction of a chemistry faculty member on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.  The program also includes weekly lunches with faculty, a poster session, and various professional and social events (e.g. visits to companies, museums, and amusement parks).

All fellows will be given the opportunity to live on campus for the duration of the program at a cost of approximately $1900.

Program History

Maximillian Nandor Lando, a 1902 chemistry graduate of the University of Minnesota, initiated the Lando Program in 1973 with funds from his bequest to the University of Minnesota.  Lando has been, and is presently also supported by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) grant.

Applicants are accepted from those students who are presently in their sophomore or junior year of undergraduate studies in chemistry or closely related fields.

All students who fulfill these requirements are eligible to apply to the NSF/REU and the Lando Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program.
