The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) has a program, the OMSI Science Communication Fellowship, that I wanted to let you know about. OMSI Science Communication Fellows are researchers or science professionals including faculty, graduate students, technicians, or other individuals in science, engineering, health, or technology related positions. OMSI Fellows participate in a series of professional development workshops that cover science communication best practices and provide opportunities for participants to practice new skills and techniques. In collaboration with OMSI, each Fellow will develop a unique hands-on educational activity designed to communicate their research to public audiences and will join OMSI in engaging museum visitors with these activities at Meet a Scientist events.
Application Deadline & Workshop Schedule
Applications are due Monday, November 5th. An online application and further information about the Fellowship program can be found on OMSI’s website at https://omsi.edu/science-communication-services and at the new OSU-OMSI Partnership webpages here:https://www.science.oregonstate.edu/omsi-partnership.  The workshop dates for this round are:
Workshop 1: Thursday, January 24, 1-4pm (at OSU)
Workshop 2: Thursday, March 7, 1-4pm (at OSU)

Eligibility: Professionals (including researchers, faculty, students, etc.) in the College of Science at OSU. This scholarship is possible through the generosity of OSU College of Science donors.
Scholarship Amount: $925

Securing Funding
We invite all interested applicants to apply even if you have not yet found funding.  OSU is committed to helping as many students and faculty as possible participate in this opportunity. OMSI can assist in initiating conversations to find funding through your department, college, or advisor.  We are happy to provide information on the Fellowship, including a recent evaluation report on our program documenting the impacts on the STEM professionals participating in the OMSI Fellowship. Please reach out to Amanda Fisher, Senior Science Communication Specialist, to request support.

Broader Impacts
Many of the participants in the Fellowship program secure their tuition through broader impacts or education and outreach components of current research grants.  If you’d like help to secure funding for participation in a future cohort, please reach out to us.  We often work with researchers to incorporate the Fellowship into broader impact plans within NSF grant proposals. If you are interested in pursuing this option, or would like to invite us to facilitate an info session with your lab group or department on broader impact proposal collaborations, please get in touch with Amanda directly.  Her email is afisher@omsi.edu, and direct line is 503-797-4635.  We expect to run 2-3 cohorts per year (with one cohort per year at OSU) so there are many opportunities to get involved.

The Department of Chemistry at Washington State University has an opening for an organic chemistry research and teaching associate in the Mancini Group. We would be grateful if you could share the attached information with your department. Information on the position and research projects can be found at  http://www.mancinilab.com/postdoc-ad.html.

With recent changes in recycling, it’s more important than ever to recycle right. The following are NOT recyclable in standard bins: cups (paper or plastic), napkins, plastic bags, wrappers, Styrofoam, plastic “clamshell” containers (to go, salad greens, etc.), or food-contaminated items. By keeping these out of recycle bins, we make recycling more cost-effective and provide a better work environment for those who process our recycling. See what can be recycled at http://tiny.cc/r-guide.

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Fred Hutch) hosts a summer internship that is designed to provide biomedical research experience and mentorship for undergraduate students of rising senior status.  We would appreciate your help promoting the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) among students at Oregon State University.  I have attached an informational brochure that offers an overview of the program and a brief snapshot of important dates below, including how to apply.

About the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The SURP is an intensive, 9-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for rising-senior undergraduate students who are interested in biomedical research.  Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will:

  • Complete an independent research project;
  • Attend weekly research seminars;
  • Participate in professional development workshops designed to facilitate the preparation of competitive applications for graduate/medical school; and
  • Present their findings at a competitive poster session.

The program will run from Monday, June 10Friday, August 9, 2019.

An online application for the 2019 SURP will be available via the SURP website in mid-November 2018.

The application deadline is midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 11, 2019.

Letters of recommendation for up to two references are due by midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) onFriday, January 18, 2019.

Other Biomedical Research Internships

I also wanted to share with you a resource that my colleagues and I developed, which is a catalog of biomedical research internships offered nationwide for high school, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, graduate, and first-year medical students.
