MEMORANDUM

To:            University Employees

From:       Donna Chastain, Director and Interim Chief Human Resources Officer, Office of Human Resources

Subject:   Closures or Curtailment of Operations (including inclement weather or hazardous conditions)

If it becomes necessary for the University to close or curtail operations due to inclement weather or hazardous conditions, employees will be notified that they are not to report to work.  Information regarding closures or curtailments will be distributed in the following manner:

1.    The official time of closure will be posted on the University’s OSU Campus Alert website http://alert.oregonstate.edu.  Announcements of closures or curtailments will typically also be noted on the OSU home web page, http://oregonstate.edu, with a headline linking readers to the OSU Campus Alert home page.

2.    Information will also be posted online via the FlashAlert Newswire at http://www.flashalert.net/.  On the map, click on the Willamette Valley, then “Public Colleges & Universities,” and choose Oregon State University to see any current information or new announcements.

3.    The OSU Department of Public Safety/Oregon State Police Emergency Status Information Phone provides current information about weather alerts and closures as well as campus emergencies.  The recorded phone message will report the status of campus (open or closed) and information related to the emergency or closure situation.  You may access this information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by dialing 541-737-8000.

4.    In some cases, supervisors will call employees at home to inform them of closure or curtailment information.

5.    The University will ask that announcements be made on the following radio and television stations and, where appropriate, their websites:

The University will make every effort to announce a closure or curtailment decision before the start of the work day. The information will be distributed or posted by 6:30 a.m. The official closure time will be posted to the announcement located at http://alert.oregonstate.edu/. Unless otherwise informed, employees are to assume that the University is open and that they are to report to work.

As a reminder, only the President or his designee may close the University.  On-campus departments may not cease operations and send employees home due to inclement weather or hazardous conditions unless the President has closed the University.  Off-campus facilities should contact the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration to discuss the appropriateness of ceasing or curtailing operations at their location if they believe it is necessary.

Should you have questions, please contact Viki Dimick Jackson at: viki.dimick@oregonstate.edu or by phone at: 541-737-0547.

The President’s Commission on the Status of Women provides funding to women faculty, students, and staff who are pursuing professional development or conducting research, outreach, or creative projects related to women’s issues. Scholarships average $500. Applications are due Friday, Oct. 28, with notification in Week 7.  Please visit http://leadership.oregonstate.edu/pcosw/awards-scholarships for detailed guidelines and application links.

The third annual Portland American Chemical Society Undergraduate Poster Symposium and Career Fair will be held on Sunday, October 23, at the SRTC Building at Portland State University, from 4-7 PM.  We hope to have 40 or more undergraduates presenting posters about their summer research; there will be free pizza and pastries (and other food and drink).

There will be $150 first prizes and possibly $75 second prizes in each of seven divisions (Organic, Inorganic, Analytical, Physical, Biochemistry, Polymers, Materials).  Note that the chances of winning a prize are pretty high!

We anticipate that representatives of many local companies and graduate schools will be present; the schedule is designed to allow plenty of time for the students to leave their posters and interact with the recruiters and other students.

I am writing to seek your help in getting this information to every undergraduate attending a school in the Portland or Oregon ACS sections who did chemistry-related research during the summer of 2016.  No one knows this better than the faculty.  Please forward this to your colleagues, and through them (or directly) to appropriate students; in addition to those who did research on campus last summer, please try to remember those who did research somewhere else.  Company and national lab internships count, as long as the students are able to divulge their results, and researchers from other departments are also welcome, as long as there is some connection to chemistry.  The results need not be high impact—we understand that some projects do not work as expected, but one can still make good posters about them.

There is no selection process for this event—any student registering may present.  Full information, including registration instructions, can be found at the following web site:  https://sites.google.com/site/portlandacsposters/home.  However, we do not want a bunch of no-shows—registration should constitute a good-faith commitment to attend and present.

Deadline for registration is October 11.  We need some lead time to prepare the booklet.  To encourage early submission, there will be a $10 prize for the first 5 students who register!

Cheers,
Dave Reingold
