OMSI Science Communication Fellowship Program at OSU
Greetings science communication enthusiasts and advocates,
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) has recently launched a program, the OMSI Science Communication Fellowship, that I wanted to let you know about. OMSI Science Communication Fellows are industry or academic researchers or science professionals, including faculty, graduate students, technicians, or other individuals in science, engineering, health, or technology related positions. After participating in a science communication “short course,” Fellows are certified by OMSI as current science ambassadors and skilled communicators. Fellows join OMSI in helping public audiences engage with science by engaging museum visitors in hands-on activities that represent their own work at the twice-monthly Meet a Scientist program.
We are excited to announce that in partnership with Oregon State University (OSU), the Spring 2017 Cohort of the Science Communication Fellowship will be held primarily on the OSU campus. A participant schedule of commitments for the spring cohort, online application, and information about tuition and scholarships is posted at https://www.omsi.edu/science-fellowship. We are mostly recruiting for these cohorts through word-of-mouth, so I would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word to any of your contacts who might be interested in participating.
Amanda Fisher, OMSI’s Science Communication Fellowship Program Coordinator, is leading this effort and would be more than happy to talk with you or your contacts further about the program. We also often work with researchers to incorporate this program into broader impact plans for NSF grant proposals. If you are interested in pursuing this option, or would like to invite us to facilitate a brownbag or webinar session with your lab group or department on broader impact proposal collaborations, please get in touch with her directly. Tuition for the program is $1,850 per participant. A limited number of scholarships are available for the Spring 2017 cohort:

Eligibility: Professional (including researchers, practitioners, students, etc.) working in a field related to food science and/or nutrition. OMSI Food Science Fellows will be invited to participate in special programming held in OMSI’s eatery, Theory.
Maximum request: $1,250
OSU College of Science Scholarships
Eligibility: OSU College of Science affiliated graduate students, faculty, personnel, and post-docs

Meningococcal Disease
Corvallis faculty, staff and students,
We are writing to provide a public health reminder as an Oregon State University Corvallis student is being treated at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center for meningococcal disease.
This disease is not highly contagious and is transmitted through direct contact with a person who is ill with meningococcal disease. This could include contact with droplets from coughing or sneezing; other discharges from the nose or throat; or by sharing eating and drinking utensils, smoking devices; or intimate contact.
Benton County health officials say customarily individuals at risk of catching meningococcal disease have spent at least four hours cumulatively in close, face-to-face association with a person suffering from the disease within seven days before the illness started.
Symptoms of the disease include high fever, headache, diarrhea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal discomfort, and stiff neck. Some people do not get meningitis, but they contract an infection of the bloodstream, which causes high fever and a rash. This rash develops rapidly and usually appears on the armpits, groin and ankles, as well as in areas where elastic pressure is applied.
If you are experiencing these symptoms, please immediately visit your primary care physician, OSU Student Health Services, or a nearby urgent care medical clinic or emergency room.
The best way to prevent meningococcal disease is by vaccination.

Teel’s Travel Planners resigns
OSU Community:
Earlier this month OSU received and accepted a termination letter from Teel’s Travel Planners. The OSU contract with Teel’s will end effective November 30th, 2016. We expressed a great deal of gratitude to Teel’s for their longstanding service to OSU Faculty and Staff. I am confident that our remaining Travel Management Companies(TMC), will be able to handle the influx in volume without sacrificing customer service to campus travelers.

Procurement Contracts & Materials Management (PCMM), has worked hard on creating price agreements directly with three major Airlines. When conducting OSU business through CI Azumano or Shorts you will receive discounts when you fly on United, Alaska, and Delta airlines. You can find a summary sheet on our Travel Page that helps explain the discounts OSU travelers will receive.
Business Affairs and PCMM has also worked very closely with CI Azumano to provide an Online Booking Tool(OBT) to campus users. This OBT is similar in nature to commercial tools you may be familiar with such as Orbitz, Kayak, and Travelocity. To learn more about this tool please visit our CI Azumano nuTravel page. If you prefer to work directly with an agent, you can call their local area number 541-757-9792. You can also complete a Travel Request form to initiate a trip via email.
