Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences
The program provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The current grant level is $300,000; $75,000 per year for a four-year period. For the 2019 award, one nomination will be invited from each of the participating institutions. Class objectives: This course will provide an introduction to the numerical computing and graphics environment and programming language, MATLAB, and is intended for beginning graduate students in any science / engineering discipline. The MATLAB desktop environment will be introduced and basic programming and data analysis skills will be developed, with an emphasis on writing optimized routines to analyze data sets utilizing matrix algebra and vectorization of functions. Basic graphics and visualization will be covered, including two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphing, contouring and movies. The course will emphasize hands-on computer lab experience during the lecture hours and out of class programming assignments.
Tentative Class Schedule (subject to revision based on student interest):
-Introduction – MATLAB desktop and environment
-Data types and arrays, strings, cells, structures
-m-files, functions, anonymous functions, for loops, while loops, if statements, errors, debugging,
-Debugging, profiling, good coding practices,
-File input / output; ascii, binary, etc.
-Lots and lots of pretty graphics
-Curve fitting and parameter estimation
-Solving differential equations, initial value problems, boundary value problems, PDEs
-Time series analysis, detrending, outlier detection, filtering

Organic Lecturer position
As Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Portland State University (PSU), I am writing to request your assistance in identifying any graduates or affiliates of your department who may be interested in a full-time lecturer position in Organic Chemistry at PSU beginning September 2018.
We seek an exceptional educator who will contribute to the tradition of high-quality teaching in the Department. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with the Organic Chemistry faculty in the development of curriculum, teach one of the large enrollment sections of sophomore Organic Chemistry (125 – 400 students), coordinate and oversee the Organic Chemistry teaching laboratories and graduate student TAs, and manage the course workshops. Green and Sustainable Chemistry Award – Bower Award and Prize – Nomination Deadline 5/31
The Franklin Institute is currently accepting nominations for the 2019 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science of individuals who have made significant contributions to Green and Sustainable Chemistry—chemistry focused on the technological design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. Objectives of green and sustainable chemistry include: minimizing the use of chemical raw materials, reducing waste, lowering the toxicity of utilized chemicals, and improving lifecycle through the use of more sustainable or renewable raw materials to produce fuels or chemicals, thereby minimizing the environmental impact of chemical processes.
Nominations are encouraged in, but not limited to, the following subtopics:
- New chemical processes with reduced hazardous byproducts
- Applications of supercritical fluids in chemical processes as environmentally benign solvents for chemical reactions, extractions, and chemical analyses
- Utilization of ionic liquids as environmentally friendly alternatives to volatile and flammable solvents in chemical processes
- Use of catalysts that make chemical processes more selective, less energy intensive, or more economical in their use of feedstock
- Chemicals and fuels from renewable raw materials as feedstocks
Nominations for this award are limited to an individual nominee and are accepted from any individual or organization, including self-nominations.
