Special Genomics Fellowship Scholarships
For this summer cohort, we will have special scholarship funding available for three PSU and OHSU genomics researchers. These Fellows will participate in special Meet a Scientist programs during Fall 2015 to celebrate the featured exhibit, Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code. If you are interested in this scholarship, please indicate your request to be considered for this funding in your scholarship application.

Please feel free to send this announcement to any colleagues who may have interest in the program. We also often work with researchers to incorporate this program into broader impact plans for NSF grant proposals. If you are interested in pursuing this option, please get in touch with me directly.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this program. I am happy to chat!

Best regards,

The Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry (CSMC) and Calapooia Brewery would like to invite you all to: Not your granny’s magnets! Radioactivity! Things that glow! Cool Chemistry from the depths of the Periodic Table. A Science Pub Presentation by May Nyman, an associate professor of chemistry at Oregon State University.

Description:
Forgotten at the bottom of the Periodic Table are the f-elements with the f-electrons. Not ‘what-the-f’; just ‘f’. Come find out why f-electrons in f-elements are so useful for your hybrid cars, wind energy, high-efficiency LED lightbulbs, catching counterfeiters, and so much more.

Bio:
May is an associate professor of chemistry at Oregon State University; where she and her research group study all types of metal-oxo clusters in water. May has been in the Pacific Northwest only 2.5 years; a former desert rat, and is dealing with the rain and loving the beer just fine, thank you. In the high New Mexico desert, May worked at Sandia National Laboratories for 14.5 years; but she knows no government secrets, so don’t bother asking.

It is time, once again, for OSU to name the “Undergraduate Researcher of the Year.” This award, which seeks to recognize significant efforts of students engaged in scholarly work in their disciplines, will be presented to one student participant in the Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence (CUE) event to be held on the MU Quad on May 14. Students in each undergraduate college will be recognized, as well as an awardee for the entire campus. Nominations for the award are due no later than April 13 and must come from faculty mentors. The process is described on the Undergraduate Research Web Page – http://oregonstate.edu/students/research/. Please direct questions to Kevin Ahern at ahernk@onid.orst.edu.

The OSU chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is accepting nominations through April 10, for the Emerging Scholar Award. The chapter established the award to honor tenure-track faculty members in any academic unit who are in the early stages of their professional careers in recognition of outstanding research or creative activity in their field of study. The award consists of a plaque and first year membership dues to both the local OSU Chapter and the National Society of Phi Kappa Phi. See http://phikappaphi.oregonstate.edu/news/emerging-scholar-nominations-2015 for application information.
