Public Health Services has an opening for Epidemiologist I. The incumbent will be responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating disease, infectious disease, or injury detection programs and surveillance, as well as monitoring, reporting, and controlling activities within the county. The incumbent will be responsible for population health surveillance as well as individual investigation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A master’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in public health with specialization in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field; OR,
  2. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, life science or related field, AND, two (2) years of experience in a public health, medical or community services agency, which must have included responsibility for designing instruments for collecting and analyzing epidemiological or demographic data, and interpreting findings pertaining to such data.

Note: A Ph.D. in epidemiology, public health, life science or a closely related field from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency is highly desirable.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of epidemiology, surveillance, public health evaluation, statistical theory and methods, and have the ability to apply this knowledge to chronic or infectious disease prevention in a local government setting. The required skills include data analysis, database design, questionnaire development, and familiarity with programming in statistical software. The candidate should be able to interpret the results of a statistical analysis and have working knowledge of study design in evaluation. The position requires skills in written and oral communication including the ability to communicate complex concepts to the general public.
