DWS administers and enforces state and federal safe drinking water quality standards for 3,600 public water systems in the state of Oregon. DWS prevents contamination of public drinking water systems by protecting drinking water sources; assuring that public water systems meet standards for design, construction, and operation; inspecting public water systems and assuring that identified deficiencies are corrected; providing technical assistance to public water suppliers; providing financial assistance to construct safe drinking water infrastructure; and certifying and training water system operators.What will you do?As the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, you will represent Drinking Water Services on the Public Health Division Incident Management Team by attending coordination meetings and training and serving on the team during significant public health incidents. You will work with public water system operators in updating their risk assessments and emergency response plans and participate in statewide table-top exercises or other training and coordination activities. You will keep internal process and procedures updated and ensure staff are trained as appropriate. In addition, you will perform outreach and coordination activities with local, state, and federal emergency response partners.  Working directly with public water systems half-time, you will evaluate facilities and operational performance of major and complex water supply systems; assess the public water system’s technical, managerial, and financial capacity to produce safe drinking water; investigate and characterize the public health impact of contaminants affecting public water systems; and perform other related environmental problems.

  • Three years of experience in environmental health specializing in drinking water. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a natural resource program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND
    a bachelor’s degree in environmental healt), or three additional years of related drinking water quality experience.
  • Applicants must be registered or eligible to become registered as a Professional Environmental Health Specialist and maintain current registration for pay option D; OR registered as an Environmental Health Specialist-In-Training or able to do so within 6 months and be able to obtain registration as a Professional Environmental Health Specialist in Oregon within 2 years for pay option A.
  • Oregon Driver’s License required as occasional overnight travel is required.
  • Experience working with drinking water systems, drinking water regulations, and emergency preparedness and response.
