Drivers distracted by the gadgets on their cars cause thousands of deaths each year. To address the problem, Steven Reid, David Taylor, Ryan Kalb, and Patrick Simonson set out to design an automobile dashboard that minimizes distractions by simplifying the interface and narrowing the driver’s focus to the steering wheel and the dashboard in front of it. Their interface won an honorable mention in Intel’s 2012 Cornell Cup competition.

“We want to reinvent the driver experience,” said Reid. “Safer, more efficient, but still have that rich, interactive experience — that’s what people are used to. We’re trying to build that in, but not make it distracting.” Continue reading →

On Saturday, April 13, Oregon State’s Global Formula Racing (GFR) team unveiled their 2013 race car. Having three world championships under their belt, the unveiling was a highly anticipated event.

A 30-minute meet and greet preceded the unveiling, where attendees could ask questions about race car models that were on display from the three previous years. Attendees then had the opportunity to view a promotional video with highlights from the past four years with the GFR team.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) put together a Pacific Northwest Student Conference the weekend of April 25-27 at Oregon State University. Events included a concrete canoe competition, a technical paper competition, and an engineering knowledge competition, among others.

McAlexander Fieldhouse was filled with excitement on the final day of the conference as 17 schools from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, and Montana participated in the steel bridge competition. Each team practices and then brings their skills to see who can build the lightest bridge in the least amount of time. After the bridge is complete, 2,500 pounds of weight is put on it. The bridge that fares best under the massive weight is considered the better model. University of Alaska Fairbanks came in first place while Oregon State took fourth place. The contest is a great opportunity for some friendly competition, networking, and a little showing off between civil engineers from different universities.

Over spring break, six students from the Oregon State chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) swapped rest and relaxation for networking and professional development at the 39^th annual NSBE convention in Indianapolis. Under the leadership of OSU NSBE President and Industrial Engineering senior, Nathan Okorley, the chapter set out to increase Oregon State’s profile at NSBE through service on regional executive board and professional development. Congratulations to MIME associate professor Roberto Albertani, who has been appointed the State of Oregon representative for the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

The AIAA was established in 1963 by merging the American Rocket Society and the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences for purposes of better supporting the development of future aerospace professionals, practicing aerospace professionals, and the organizations and institutions involved in aerospace. In his new capacity, Dr. Albertani will work to enhance existing links and develop new connections between the AIAA and educational institutions, the aerospace industry, and government authorities at both the State and regional levels.
