Health factors are a view to the <em>future<\/em> health of our communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">HEALTH OUTCOMES: Length of Life, Quality of Life<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">HEALTH FACTORS: Health Behaviors,Clinical Care,Social &amp; Economic Factors, Physical Environment<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe<em> County Health Rankings<\/em> illustrate <u>what we know<\/u> when it comes to what is making people sick or healthy. The <em>Roadmaps<\/em> shows <u>what we can do<\/u> to create healthier places to live, learn, work, and play,\u201d states the <em>County Health Rankings &amp; Roadmaps<\/em> website.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Division of University Outreach and Engagement (Division) is positively impacting the future well-being of those living in Oregon by directly impacting its health factors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Healthy People. Healthy Planet. Healthy Economy.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For seven years, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.countyhealthrankings.org\"><em>County Health Rankings &amp; Roadmaps<\/em><\/a> program, has been an important tool for counties striving to build a culture of health. It\u2019s a tool to benchmark community efforts and also to identify how investments in healthy living factors\u2014or lack thereof\u2014are changing health outcomes. Health factors and gaps are tracked annually for almost every county in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.countyhealthrankings.org\/app\/oregon\/2016\/overview\">Oregon\u2019s county rankings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The work being done by the Division makes a dramatic difference in the lives of Oregonians, from today\u2019s youth to tomorrow entrepreneurs and farmers. <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">A presence in every county in Oregon and responsiveness to local concerns magnify the Division\u2019s impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Moving from Awareness to Action<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1366\" class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignright\" style=\"width: 300px;\">\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/engage\/files\/2016\/03\/CHR-Action-Center-e1458593036572.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1366 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/engage\/files\/2016\/03\/CHR-Action-Center-300x285.png\" alt=\"CHR-Action-Center\" width=\"300\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a>\n    <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">COUNTY HEALTH RANKINGS &amp; ROADMAPS ACTION CYCLE<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n<p>Using the <em>County Health Rankings &amp; Roadmaps<\/em> model, how long and how well we live are impacted by four major health factors (80% of which are <u>not<\/u> related to healthcare): Health behaviors (30%), Clinical Care (20%), Social &amp; Economic Factors (40%), and Physical Environment (10%). <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Programs and services offered through the Division of University Outreach and Engagement\u2014Extension Service, Ecampus, and PACE\u2014directly improve the factors and measurements that move the gauge on better living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>County Health Rankings &amp; Roadmaps<\/em> program offers an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.countyhealthrankings.org\/roadmaps\/action-center\">action model<\/a> similar to our outreach and engagement work. The online <a href=\"http:\/\/www.countyhealthrankings.org\/roadmaps\/action-center\">action model<\/a> provides guidance to move from awareness to community action; identifies effective, research-based policies and programs; and a coaching resource is available to advance a culture of health (Raquel Bournhonesque is the community coach located in Oregon and serving the Northwest).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples of how Division efforts correspond directly to the action model advocated by The <em>County Health Rankings &amp; Roadmaps<\/em> program (quotes are from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.countyhealthrankings.org\/\">program website<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter educated individuals live longer, healthier lives than those with less education, and their children are more likely to thrive.\u201d OSU Open Campus, Ecampus and PACE support this area of individual and community health.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLifelong health habits, such as good nutrition, physical fitness and stress management, are developed in childhood.\u201d 4-H tackles this head-on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/engage\/files\/2016\/03\/County-maps-large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1375 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/engage\/files\/2016\/03\/County-maps-large-164x300.jpg\" alt=\"County maps large\" width=\"164\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1270\/files\/2016\/03\/County-maps-large-164x300.jpg 164w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1270\/files\/2016\/03\/County-maps-large-559x1024.jpg 559w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1270\/files\/2016\/03\/County-maps-large.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><\/a>\u201cA county\u2019s health greatly affects its economic competitiveness. Achieving lower health care costs, fewer sick days, and increased productivity are all critical to economic growth.\u201d SNAP-Ed and Family Community Health are devoted to healthy living education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Community Development sector\u2026shares a common focus on improving low- and moderate-income communities.\u201d Extension helps agriculture, marine fisheries and other industries improve productivity, safety, and profitability with research-based and community supported initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState and local government officials can\u2026identify the barriers to good health in their communities, and mobilize community leaders to take action \u2013 investing in programs and policy changes that help residents lead healthier lives.\u201d OSU Extension works hand-in-hand with county commissioners and other community leaders to identify needs and develop programs to meet those needs. State and county funding ensures Extension is integral to state and county efforts to nurture healthy communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClean air and safe water are prerequisites for health.\u201d Poor water quality sickens people, threatens wildlife, and diminishes recreational opportunities. Needless to say, OSU Extension is at the forefront of supporting healthy, sustainable environments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s just the tip of the Division\u2019s programs and actions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <em>Rankings<\/em> data are only as valuable as the action it inspires and the lives it improves,\u201d said Bridget Catlin, PhD, MHSA, co-director of the <em>County Health Rankings<\/em>. \u201c\u2026targeting resources to the people and places in greatest need is essential to building a Culture of Health.
