Elevating Equity within the Division of University Outreach and Engagement is the topic of this month’s First Monday Video. Mario’s recommendations provide insight into how to move from an equality mindset to one focusing on equity.

We embrace and advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice” is a stated Value held by the Division of University Outreach and Engagement. Jane Waite, Senior Associate for Social Justice Learning and Engagement in the Office of Academic Affairs talked with Vice Provost Scott Reed about the excellent diversity, inclusion and social justice work the Division is doing in this month’s First Monday Video.

Scott and Jane mention the Division’s Diversity Catalyst Team (DCT), a task force appointed by Scott consisting of representatives from across the Division, in their discussion. The team works to articulate a vision and design and implement strategies to create a climate for change relative to diversity issues in higher education. Membership is open to any Division employee. First Monday Video, April 2016 —

In 2007, the OSU Extension Service and Educational Outreach, which includes Ecampus, PACE and EESC, joined forces and created the Division of University Outreach and Engagement. Provost Sabah Randhawa wanted to know what new initiatives are taking place as a result of the reorganization. After compiling a survey of 36 county Extension offices, Vice Provost Scott Reed reports on new initiatives in April’s First Monday Video. Hint: Extension offices are proctoring online exams, have established new community partnerships and programs, and are directing thousands of inquiring parents and students to OSU resources, filling the pipeline for new OSU Beavers. The term Social demography was coined by Kingsley Davis in 1963. Beginning in the 1960s, “training in social demography became formalized into academia,”1 and then in 1975, the first conference on social demography was held.

Rare in the world of Extension, the Division of Outreach and Engagement has a dedicated social demographer – Lena Etuk – who offers insights to Extension’s 10 regions and beyond using the Communities Reporter Tool (CRT). CRT presents 200 indicators and data from more than 30 sources by city, county, and census tract, from 1990 to today.

The field of social demography uses demographic data and methods to describe, explain, and predict social phenomena. It also measures the effect of social forces on population distribution. Profiles of Extension’s 10 regions are available to help identify service gaps and also where counties excel.

November 2, 2015 — In this month’s video, Scott Reed introduces O&E’s new Communications & Marketing Manager who is charged with communicating the purpose, activities and accomplishments of the Division, which ultimately will result in strong stakeholder support. He also reveals why the focus on community outreach is vital.

Scott believes: “The engagement trajectory we’re on will change the university, and everyone in the Division is key to that. In the spirit of co-creation and reciprocity, community engagement makes the university better.”
