During his talk, the original footage of the 2017 exhibit will be screened.&nbsp;<strong>3-5 p.m., The Little Gallery. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tuesday, Oct. 29<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Polarization and Incivility in American Politics: Is Congressional Gridlock Affecting U.S. State Legislatures?<\/strong> \u2014 Using results from a national survey of state legislative lobbyists and legislative liaison personnel, this talk examines the effects of polarization, incivility and gridlock in the US Congress on the longstanding norms of comity and civility, legislative deliberations, and the capacity for bipartisan problem-solving in state legislatures. With <strong>Nicholas Lovrich<\/strong> and <strong>Francis Benjamin <\/strong>from Washington State University. An opening reception is planned for <strong>2-5 p.m.<\/strong> on <strong>Nov. 14.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.photo-emphasis.com\/artists\/julia-bradshaw-2019\">interview<\/a> with Associate Professor <strong>Julia Bradshaw<\/strong> was published in the online journal &#8220;Photo-Emphasis.&#8221; The article referred to her work and a discussion of the Photography and Digital Studio program at Oregon State University.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coordinator of Contemporary Music and Research&nbsp;<strong>Dana Reason<\/strong>&nbsp;(keyboard and computer) and Instructor of Music&nbsp;<strong>Michael Gamble<\/strong>&nbsp;(video and guitar) performed with New York-based multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily on Friday, October 18 at Beacon Sound as part of the 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;annual Improvisation Summit hosed by the Creative Music Guild in Portland. The performance also included Lisa Schoenberg (drums\/samples) and current OSU visual art student Paris Myers. Gamble also serves as artistic director of the Creative Music Guild, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting experimental improvised music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sarah Dermody,<\/strong>&nbsp;assistant professor in the School of Psychological Science, published a paper, \u201cThe time-varying effect of alcohol use on cigarette smoking relapse risk,\u201d in&nbsp;the journal \u201cAddictive Behaviors.\u201d The study has important implications for how alcohol use interventions can be timed with smoking cessation efforts to improve one\u2019s ability to quit smoking cigarettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professors <strong>Bradley Boovy<\/strong> (SLCS, World Languages and Cultures; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) and <strong>Natchee Barnd<\/strong> (SLCS, Ethnic Studies) published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utpjournals.press\/doi\/full\/10.3138\/seminar.55.4.1\">the article<\/a> \u201cActivating Affinities\u201d in&nbsp;&#8220;Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David Kerr<\/strong>, associate professor in the School of Psychological Science,&nbsp;co-authored&nbsp;a paper in&nbsp;&#8220;Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology&#8221; entitled, \u201cMen\u2019s misuse of prescription opioids from early to middle adulthood: An examination of developmental and concurrent prediction models.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kirsi Peltom\u00e4ki<\/strong>, associate professor of art history, recently published an edited book,&nbsp;&#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/exmail.oregonstate.edu\/owa\/CLAthisWeek@oregonstate.edu\/redir.aspx?C=nV68mDLzJ6dPHuValhPlXeNwyvYltQUVZESmEBvax2vU47POhlnXCA..&amp;URL=https%3a%2f%2fmitpress.mit.edu%2fbooks%2fpublic-knowledge\" target=\"_blank\">Public Knowledge: Selected Writings by Michael Asher<\/a>&#8221;&nbsp;(MIT Press). This book is a collection of contemporary artist Michael Asher\u2019s writings, mostly previously unpublished, resulting from Peltom\u00e4ki\u2019s research in Asher\u2019s archive. Asher (1943-2012) was a conceptual artist associated with institutional critique and influential educator at the California Institute of the Arts. Peltom\u00e4ki\u2019s compilation of Asher\u2019s texts is accompanied by extensive editorial notes by Peltom\u00e4ki providing historical and theoretical context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Humanities <strong>Christopher&nbsp;McKnight&nbsp;Nichols<\/strong> will give a talk entitled, &#8220;&#8216;Pursuing a Free Hand&#8217;: The Election of 1952 and Conservative Foreign Policy in the Early Cold War&#8221; on October 28 at Ohio State University in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mershoncenter.osu.edu\/events\/christopher-nichols-pursuing-free-hand-election-1952-and-conservative-foreign-policy-early\">International History Speakers Series<\/a> at the Mershon Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Emerita of Theatre Arts <strong>Charlotte Headrick <\/strong>presented a paper \u201cA Rose is a Rose:&nbsp; Corrib, Portland\u2019s Irish Theatre\u201d at the annual October meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies, Western Region in Portland, Oregon. Additionally, she performed a reading of Christian O\u2019Reilly\u2019s&nbsp;&#8220;Chappati&#8221; with John Countryman of Virginia Commonwealth University and presented a lobby talk on Corrib\u2019s production of Patricia Burke Brogan\u2019s &#8220;Eclipsed.&#8221; She is a past president of this organization<em>. <\/em>On October<em> <\/em>22, she was the narrator for the \u201cCarnival of Animals\u201d for Willamette Apprentice Ballet, performing for 600 students and families at LaSells Stewart Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor of Philosophy <strong>Joseph Orosco<\/strong> presented, \u201cUsing Star Trek to Teach Peace Studies in a Polarized Society\u201d at the annual meeting of the Concerned Philosophers for Peace at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, on October 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ron Mize<\/strong>, associate professor in the School of Language, Culture and Society, served as moderator for a panel on \u201cThe State of Education for Oregon\u2019s Latinx Community\u201d sponsored by the Meyer Memorial Trust, Collins Foundation, and Oregon Community Foundation on October 25&nbsp;in Portland.
