American Revolutionary: The Grace Lee Boggs Story \u2014\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Film and Discussion.\u00a0<\/b>This documentary plunges us into Boggs\u2019s<\/a> lifetime of vital thinking and action, traversing the major U.S. social movements of the last century; from labor to civil rights, to Black Power, feminism, the Asian American and environmental justice movements and beyond. Martin Luther: Man, Monk, Scholar, Transformer<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 How do Martin Luther and the Reformation connect to our lives today? Come and hear Dr. Kurt Hendel<\/strong> speak about Luther\u2019s own spiritual quest, Lutheran ethical themes and altruism and Luther\u2019s timely conceptions of the mission of the church and Christian attitudes toward people of other faiths. Dr. Hendel is the Bernard, Fisher, Westberg Distinguished Ministry Professor Emeritus of Reformation History at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. 4<\/span>\u00a0p.m., Grace Lutheran Church. Music \u00e0 la Carte<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 OSU Jazz Ensemble<\/strong>, directed by Ryan Biesack, will perform at 12 p.m<\/strong>. in the Memorial Union Lounge<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Nov. 1, SAC Presents Voces 8<\/strong>. The UK\u2019s renowned octet performs impeccable a cappella and choral music, ranging from Renaissance pieces to their own arrangements of pop tunes. The Oregon State University Chamber Choir<\/strong> joins Voces8on the program. News<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

At the World Congress of Philosophy in Beijing next year, the Jicarilla Apache philosopher Viola F. Cordova<\/strong> will be honored as one of 52 women philosophers from the global history of philosophy.\u00a0 She will take her place on a calendar that features a woman philosopher for every week of 2019. The calendar is a project of the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Internationale des Soci\u00e9t\u00e9s de Philosophie, the highest non-governmental world organization for philosophy. Dr. Cordova was a visiting professor for three years in OSU\u2019s Department of Philosophy.\u00a0 Her original papers are collected in the library of the School of History, Philosophy and Religion here and published as\u00a0“How It Is: The Native American Philosophy of V. F. Cordova” (University of Arizona Press, 2007), edited by Kathleen Dean Moore, Kurt Peters, and others.<\/p>\n

Call for Proposals\u2014Center for the Humanities 2018-2019 Fellowships \u2014 <\/b>The Center for the Humanities is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 Resident Research Fellowship Program. Awards and Honors<\/h2>\n

Instructor of Music\u00a0Jan Michael Looking Wolf <\/b>won the award for best performance in a music video for his song \u201cAscension\u201d\u00a0at the 17th\u00a0annual Native American Music Awards on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Niagra Falls, NY. He was also was nominated for Flutist of the Year and Duo-Group of the Year for \u201cAscension,\u201d a new age Native American Flute CD\u00a0released in early 2017.\u00a0The complete winners list and more information are available here<\/a>. Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Sarah Dermody<\/strong> of the School of Psychological Science co-authored an article in the “Annals of Behavioral Medicine” with colleagues from the University of Toronto, Canada, Christian Hendershot and Jeffery Wardell, entitled, \u201cPredictors of daily adherence to naltrexone for alcohol use disorder treatment during a mobile health intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Qwo-Li Driskill<\/strong> (Associate Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) was a keynote speaker on October 9, 2017 for Highline College\u2019s LGBTQIA Week and Indigenous People\u2019s Day. They also delivered the Seventh Annual Georgia Harkness Lecture for the Pacific School of Religion\u2019s Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion and Ministry on October 19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Studio art instructor Michael Boonstra<\/strong> will lecture on his recent works and current projects at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Wednesday, Oct. 25 as part of their 2017 Visiting Artist Colloquium.<\/a><\/p>\n

Instructor of Music Ryan Biesack<\/b> performed on October 19 with the Paul Krueger Quintet at Christos in Salem, Oregon in a Hard Bop tribute featuring the music of Hank Mobley, Blue Mitchel, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis and others. In addition to Biesack on drums, the quintet features trumpeter Paul Krueger, saxophonist Idit Shner, pianist Torrey Newhart and Sean Peterson on bass.<\/p>\n

Digital art instructor John Whitten<\/b> will speak about his solo exhibition, \u201cStochastic Resonance\u201d on Nov. 1 at Eastern Oregon University. The show<\/a> is up on Eastern\u2019s campus through Nov. 3. Last week, Whitten was a visiting artist at the Oregon College of Art & Craft. He will participate as a panelist for the 2018 Visual Art RACC Project Grants<\/a> in Novemb<\/p>\n

Instructor of Music Mitchell Hutchings<\/b> was recently featured in an article in Modern Singer Magazine\u00a0<\/a>as part of an ongoing series featuring prominent opera and musical theatre performers from North America and Europe.\u00a0In addition to the interview, Hutchings collaborated with Italian pianist Fabio Menchetti to create a short video of “Nulla Silenzio” from Giacomo Puccini’s “Il Tabarro” for the publication.<\/p>\n

Music at Oregon State University<\/b> held the inaugural OSU Music Education Professional Development Day on Friday, October 13. The event featured three renowned scholars and clinicians from prominent music programs around the country: Kevin Fenton from The Florida State University; Carlos Abril from the University of Miami Frost School of Music; and Craig Kirchhoff of the University of Minnesota.\u00a0The event was attended by OSU students, faculty and more than 60 public school music educators from school districts throughout Oregon. The event was organized and hosted by OSU music faculty members Jason Gossett<\/b>, Sandra Babb<\/b>, Wesley Brewer,<\/b> Chris Chapman<\/b> and Steven Zielke<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Ass<\/span>istant Professor of Latina\/o Studies and Ethnic Studies, Daniel L\u00f3pez-Cevallos\u00a0<\/strong>was invited to co-organize and present the following:\u00a0 Garside LI, L\u00f3pez-Cevallos DF, Castro M (October 20, 1017). “Access to Care for Rural Latinos: Challenges and Potential Solutions.” Oral session presented at 34th Annual Oregon Rural Health Conference<\/a>, Sunriver, OR.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bob Dylan: Photographs by Daniel Kramer <\/strong>will be at\u00a0Fairbanks Gallery, Oct. 26\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Nov. 30<\/strong>.\u00a0The photo exhibit features iconic images of Nobel Prize winner singer-songwriter Bob Dylan by photographer Daniel Kramer, curated by the Los Angeles-based\u00a0GRAMMY Museum. The exhibition documents Dylan’s metamorphosis from folk musician to rock and roll icon.<\/p>\n

Art’s\u00a0Julia Bradshaw\u00a0<\/strong>curated\u00a0<\/span>\u201cSurface Tension,<\/a>\u201d a two-person exhibit with Christopher Russell<\/strong> and Rafael Soldi<\/strong>, which will be on view at the Arts Center in Corvallis until Nov. 9<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spanish artist Dolors Escala\u2019s<\/strong> exhibit, “Emotions & Sensations,” is currently on view at The Little Gallery in 210 Kidder Hall<\/strong>. The exhibition runs through November 9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
