The screening will be followed by a panel and Q&amp;A featuring <strong>Charlie Haughey<\/strong>, whose 3,000 photographs captured the experience of the soldiers in his division and the lives of the citizens they encountered. Recently,\u00a0Guerrini gave a talk entitled,\u201cThe Whiteness of Bones: the emergence of the skeleton as a commodity, 1500-1800\u201d to the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor of History <strong>Stacey Smith<\/strong> has been <a href=\"https:\/\/journalofthecivilwarera.org\/2017\/09\/new-editor-joins-jcwe-team\/.\">appointed associate editor<\/a> for the &#8220;Journal of the Civil War Era.&#8221; In her new role, Smith will commission, develop and edit cutting edge review essays that explore the latest scholarship on the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Joshua Reeves<\/b>, assistant professor of New Media Communications and Speech Communication, was interviewed about smartphone surveillance in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/09\/21\/taser-wants-to-build-an-army-of-smartphone-informants\/\"><span class=\"s2\">The Intercept.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>David Kerr<\/strong> of the School of Psychological Science co-authored an article in the journal &#8220;Obesity Research and Clinical Practice&#8221; with University of Padua, Italy colleague, Gianluca Gini, entitled, \u201cProspective associations between peer teasing in childhood and young men\u2019s obesity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor of History <strong>Gary Ferngren\u00a0<\/strong>continued his scholarly output with a second edition of &#8220;Science and Religion: A Historical Introduction&#8221; from Johns Hopkins University Press; an essay entitled &#8220;Medicine and Spirituality: A Historical Perspective,&#8221; in &#8220;Spirituality and Religion within the Culture of Medicine: From Evidence to Practice,&#8221; edited by Michael J. Balboni and John R. Peteet<i>\u00a0<\/i>(Oxford); and another co-edited volume (with Ekaterina N. Lomperis), &#8220;Essential Readings in Medicine and Religion,&#8221; also published by Johns Hopkins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barbara Muraca<\/strong>, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, has given a keynote lecture on &#8220;Circular Economy Within or Beyond Capitalism? A Degrowth Perspective&#8221; at the GRF (Global Research Forum on Sustainable Production and Consumption) conference &#8220;Sustainable Lifestyles, Livelihoods and the Circular Economy&#8221;, University of Sussex, June 27-29 2017.\u00a0Muraca was also invited as a fellow in residence at the Federal Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, Germany for July 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Latina\/o Studies and Ethnic Studies assistant professor,<strong> Daniel L\u00f3pez-Cevallos<\/strong>, recently presented the following: &#8220;Health Status of Latinos in Oregon: Trends and Statistics.&#8221; Oral session presented at Technical Assistance in Grant Writing for Diverse Communities, US Department of Health and Human Services Region 10 &amp; Health Resources and services Administration in Corvallis. Other summer activities included serving as faculty at the YMA Arts Camp at Willamette University in Salem, where she performed on the faculty recital, coached bassoon students, and performed with the wind ensemble and orchestra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instructor of voice\u00a0<b>Amy Hansen<\/b>\u00a0performed last week at the Portland Summerfest Opera in the Park &#8220;Changing Places&#8221;art installation in collaboration with Portland Parks and Recreation and Halpin Landscaping. She coordinated two concerts of opera at Portland&#8217;s Keller Fountain (it was turned off for the performances!); mezzo-soprano Sarah Maines, bass-baritone Anton Belov and pianist Chuck Dillard joined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instructor of clarinet\u00a0<b>Carol Robe<\/b>\u00a0was featured on a recently released recording with the Westwood Wind Quintet, joining the ensemble on bass clarinet. The album featured Paul Hindemith&#8217;s Septet for woodwind quintet, trumpet and bass clarinet; William Matthias&#8217; Concertino for flute, oboe, bassoon and piano; Bruce Stark&#8217;s &#8220;Americana&#8221; wind quintet; and Leos Janacek&#8217;s &#8220;Mladi (Jugend)&#8221; for woodwind quintet and bass clarinet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instructor of music history\u00a0<b>Kimary Fick&#8217;s\u00a0<\/b>recently written textbook article &#8220;Kenner, Liebhaber, and the Rise of the Musical Amateur: C.P.E. Bach&#8217;s Fantasia in C Minor&#8221; was published in the &#8220;A-R Online Music Anthology.&#8221; Additionaly, Fick&#8217;s paper proposal &#8220;Music for Social Pleasure: The Aesthetics of Hausmusik in the North German Enlightenment&#8221; was accepted for presentation on the &#8220;Society for Eighteenth-Century Music&#8221; at the 2018 &#8220;American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies&#8221; annual conference in Orlando, Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Kerry Skarbakka\u2019s\u00a0<\/b>\u201cSocially Engaged\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/festivalguide2017.acpinfo.org\/listing\/socially-engaged\/\">exhibition<\/a> has opens this week at the Ernest G. Welch Gallery at Georgia State University. The show is in conjunction with Atlanta Celebrates Photography and runs until November 11.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Skarbakka\u2019s work is also included in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cameronartmuseum.org\/index.php?c=current&amp;s=current\">Created By Light<\/a>\u00a0at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC. That show includes more than 100 works spanning from 1887 to 2016. It opened September 16, 2017 and runs until February 11, 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Recurring Events<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Apron Wearers,\u201d work by <strong>Marissa Solini<\/strong>, theatre box office manager and office specialist, is now on exhibit in the Corinne Woodman Gallery at the <a href=\"https:\/\/theartscenter.net\/marissa-solini-apron-wearers-lauren-shaprton-exquitite-corvallis-corrine-woodman-galleries\/\">Arts Center of Corvallis.<\/a> The exhibit includes tall apron oil paintings, apron mini watercolor paintings and a wall hanging of 20 vintage aprons from Solini\u2019s personal collection. A closing reception for the exhibition will take place on <strong>Oct. 5, from 5:30 \u2013 7:30 p.m. at the Corvallis Arts Center<\/strong>.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fairbanks gallery coordinator and art instructor\u00a0<b>Andrew Nigon<\/b>\u00a0has a solo exhibition titled \u2018t\u2019 running through October 19 in the basement of Fairbanks Hall, room 004. \u2018t\u2019 is an installation of sculptures intended to create beauty by combining wild organic form and a geometric framework within single objects. Nigon\u2019s studio practice is based in the dramatic visual language of the Catholic church.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fairbanks Gallery features <strong>\u201cSpectacle,\u201d<\/strong> photographs by <strong>Nicole Jean Hill<\/strong> and <strong>Alexis Pike<\/strong>, <strong>Oct. 2 \u2013 Oct. 21<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>as part of the Society of Photographic Educators Northwest (SPE-NW) Conference being held on the OSU campus.
