Several distinguished panelists will present on thematic approaches including the courts, elections, commander-in-chief powers, and political activism, followed by a discussion with the audience of this critically important topic. Panelists include professors <strong>Rorie Solberg, David Bernell, Harry Boyte<\/strong> and <strong>Christopher Nichols<\/strong>. <strong>4 p.m., MU Journey Room<\/strong>. Light refreshments will be served.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tuesday,\u00a0Sept. 19<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>CLA&#8217;s annual <strong>New Student Barbecue<\/strong> will be held from <strong>12-2 p.m<\/strong>. at People&#8217;s Park on the west lawn of Gilkey Hall. All faculty are encouraged to attend and meet CLA&#8217;s newest students. At <strong>3 p.m., CLA Day<\/strong> will be held until <strong>5 p.m. in the MU Horizon Room,<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">with a reception featuring wine\/beer and eats at the Union\/SEC plaza immediately after.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wednesday,\u00a0Sept. 20<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Critical Questions Series<\/strong> \u2014 In this talk, English professor <strong>Evan Gottlieb<\/strong> will discuss \u201cSpeculative Romanticism, or Wordsworth and Shelley in the Anthropocene\u201d at <strong>4 p.m. in MU 206<\/strong>. The talk focuses on the question of what Romantic poets have to say to us today, when many of our current political leaders ignore the looming catastrophe of climate change. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thursday,\u00a0Sept. 21<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Emotions &amp; Sensations: The Little Gallery<\/strong> \u2014 Spanish artist Dolors Escala\u2019s exhibit, Emotions &amp; Sensations, opens at The Little Gallery in 210 Kidder Hall on Monday, Sept. 18 and runs through Nov. 9. Escala began studying texiles at the Ram\u00f3n Folch School in Barcelona and developed an interest in art and the art of engraving. Today, using handmade paper and special inks, she decides if a piece will be unique or a numbered series. Opening reception today, <strong>3-5 p.m., 210 Kidder Hall.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Friday,\u00a0Sept. 22<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Creative writing professor <strong>Susan Jackson Rodgers<\/strong> will read from her new novel, \u201cThis Must be the Place,\u201d at the Black Box Lab Theater, Withycombe Hall, at <strong>7:30 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0Rodgers is also the author of t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">wo story collections: &#8220;The Trouble With You Is\u00a0and\u00a0Ex-Boyfriend on Aisle 6.&#8221; Her fiction has appeared in journals such as the\u00a0New England Review,\u00a0North American Review,\u00a0Glimmer Train,\u00a0Beloit Fiction Journal,\u00a0Midwestern Gothic,\u00a0Colorado Review,\u00a0Quick Fiction, and\u00a0Prairie Schooner. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Upcoming Events<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Doug McAdam Lecture on Trump\u2019s Rise \u2014\u00a0<\/b>Stanford Sociologist <strong>Doug McAdam<\/strong> will give a lecture on \u201cPutting Trump in Historical Perspective: Racial Politics and Social Movements in Postwar America Today\u201d based on his 2014 book, &#8220;Deeply Divided: Racial Politics and Social Movements in Postwar America,&#8221; in <strong>MU 213<\/strong> on <strong>Wednesday., September 27, at 4 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0Light refreshments will be served. T<\/span><span class=\"s2\">he class begins a new conversation about how a collaboration between art and science can open new grounds for discussion and inquiry, and how experimentation and discovery can inform a more sophisticated dialogue for all voices engaged in the growing issues facing our environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Awards and Honors<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Congratulations to <strong>Charlene Martinez<\/strong>, who was given the Student Affairs Goal #2 Community &amp; Belonging Award from OSU\u2019s Division of Student Affairs for her work in developing multiracial community and leadership programs for OSU students. Martinez is affiliated with the School of Language, Culture, and Society, and serves as an associate director for Diversity &amp; Cultural Engagement. This past spring, she also served as a panelist for the panel, \u201cInnovating Research and Practice on Multiracial Experiences in Higher Education\u201d at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Fort Worth, Texas, May 30 \u2013 June 3, 2017<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Dana Reason<\/strong>, SAC, has received a commission from the High Desert Museum in Bend to create a new composition that explores the relationship between water and trees. Her work will be part of a larger interdisciplinary exhibit in 2019.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Congratulations to SAC Director <strong>Lee Ann Garrison,<\/strong> who has received a College of Business Partner in Innovation award for her involvement in rebuilding the design education at OSU.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In August, the Upfor Gallery of Portland hosted art professor <strong>Julie Green\u2019s<\/strong> exhibition, \u201cFashion Plate.\u201d Her work \u201cThe Last Supper: 700 Plates Illustrating final Meals of U.S. Death Row Inmates\u201d is on exhibition through Nov. 10 at the Texas State Galleries of Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. Green is a 2017 Hallie Ford Fellow.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">This summer, art faculty <strong>Julia Bradshaw<\/strong> and <strong>Andrew Myers<\/strong> each participated in artist residencies at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/playasummerlake.org\">Playa Artist\u2019s Community<\/a> in Summer Lake, Oregon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Photo instructor <strong>Lorenzo Triburgo&#8217;s<\/strong> &#8220;Policing Gender&#8221; was on view in New York City at BGSQD from June 8 through September 10. In conjunction with the exhibition of photographs and audio, Triburgo organized a number of events that happened on June 10, including a storytelling show featuring stories from formerly incarcerated LGBTQ folks and prison abolition activists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Recurring Events<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Apron Wearers,\u201d work by <strong>Marissa Solini<\/strong>, theatre box office manager and office specialist, is now on exhibit in the Corinne Woodman Gallery at the <a href=\"https:\/\/theartscenter.net\/marissa-solini-apron-wearers-lauren-shaprton-exquitite-corvallis-corrine-woodman-galleries\/\">Arts Center of Corvallis.<\/a> The exhibit includes tall apron oil paintings, apron mini watercolor paintings and a wall hanging of 20 vintage aprons from Solini\u2019s personal collection. A closing reception for the exhibition will take place on <strong>Oct. 5, from 5:30 \u2013 7:30 p.m. at the Corvallis Arts Center<\/strong>.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Work by OSU art faculty <strong>Julie Green<\/strong>, <strong>Anna Fidler<\/strong> and <strong>Kerry Skarbakka<\/strong> can be viewed at the Arts Center of Corvallis as part of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theartscenter.net\/log-cabin-medley-exhibit\">Logcabin Medley<\/a>,\u201d an exhibition in the main gallery that also features work by Corvallis artist Clay Lohmann.
