Both events are a part of <a href=\"http:\/\/spark.oregonstate.edu\">SPARK: Arts+Science@OSU<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Fairbanks Gallery at Oregon State University\u2019s Corvallis campus will present \u201c<strong>Way Beyond the Rainbow<\/strong>,\u201d the 2016-2017 Plinkiewisch Scholarship Exhibition, from <strong>March 13 through March 31<\/strong>. \u201cWay Beyond the Rainbow\u201d exhibits the varied interests and skills of the 2016-2017 Plinkiewisch scholars, who are OSU students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>News<\/h2>\n<p>CLA This Week will not be published during Spring Break. Publication will resume <strong>4\/3\/17<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Distinguished Professor of English <strong>Jon Lewis<\/strong> recently published the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucpress.edu\/book.php?isbn=9780520284326\">book<\/a>, \u201cHard-Boiled Hollywood: Crime and Punishment in Postwar Los Angeles,\u201d with University of California Press. Additionally, Lewis has been invited to speak about the book at the <a href=\"http:\/\/events.latimes.com\/festivalofbooks\/tickets-and-schedule\/la-times-ideas-exchange-series\/\">Los Angeles Times Festival of Books<\/a> in April and then at the 92nd Street Y in NYC in May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Anita Guerrini<\/strong>, Horning Professor in the Humanities, will be delivering two lectures by invitation this week at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Medical School.\u00a0The first, to the Bullitt History of Medicine Club on March 22, is titled \u201cHow to Make a Skeleton: The Emergence of the Human Skeleton as a Commodity, 1500-1800\u201d and concerns her current NSF-funded research project on the human skeleton and anatomical learning.\u00a0The second, on March 23, is a retrospective look at her 2003 book, \u201cExperimenting with Humans and Animals,\u201d and will be delivered in the Research Ethics Grand Rounds series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>David Kerr<\/strong>, associate professor in the School of Psychological Science, co-authored a paper entitled \u201cIntergenerational associations in sexual onset: Mediating influences of parental and peer sexual teasing and youth substance use\u201d in the Journal of Adolescent Health. Kerry also presented a talk entitled \u201cSlovenia-USA partnership: Understanding and Preventing Suicide\u201d at the OSU International Research Series on Healthy People.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Associate Professor of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies <strong>Qwo-Li Driskill<\/strong> recently published the co-authored <a href=\"http:\/\/tsq.dukejournals.org\/content\/current\">article<\/a> &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Trans* Political Economy Deconstructed: A Roundtable Discussion\u201d in\u00a0TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly (2017) 4(1): 16-27. Driskill also was a guest\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">speaker at the University of Waterloo\u2019s English Language and Literature Department, and presented the talk \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/english\/events\/weaving-words-talk-qwo-li-driskill\">Weaving with Words<\/a>.\u201d Additionally, Driskill&#8217;s book, &#8220;Asegi Stories: Cherokee Queer and Two-Spirit Memory&#8221; is a finalist for both the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishingtriangle.org\/index.asp\">Publishing Triangle Award<\/a> for Trans and Gender-Variant Literature and the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lambdaliterary.org\/features\/news\/03\/14\/29th-annual-lambda-literary-award-finalists-announced\/\">Lambda Literary Award<\/a> in the category of LGBTQ Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Humanities <strong>Christopher Nichols<\/strong> recently published the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiley.com\/WileyCDA\/WileyTitle\/productCd-1118913965.html\">book<\/a>, \u201cA Companion to the Gilded Age and Progressive Era: The Making of Modern America,\u201d with Wiley-Blackwell. The book is designed to be the single, definitive resource for the latest state of knowledge relating to the history and historiography of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Elizabeth Marino<\/strong>, assistant professor of anthropology and sustainability at OSU-Cascades, was invited to give a guest lecture last week at the University of British Columbia on migration, climate change and colonialism. She has also been invited to contribute as an author on the National Climate Assessment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Susan Balter-Reitz<\/strong> (University of Montana-Billings) and <strong>Natalie Dollar<\/strong>, associate professor of speech communication (OSU-Cascades) hosted a roundtable titled, \u201cWho Speaks for the Dead?\u201d at the Southwest\/Texas Popular Culture Conference, Albuquerque, NM, February 15-18, 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Their presentation was titled, \u201cIt Depends on Whom We Ask: A Toulmin Scholar, A Cultural Discourse Scholar, or Perhaps Both.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Lorenzo Triburgo<\/b>, instructor in art and photography, gave two presentations at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spenational.org\/conferences\/2017-spe-national-conference\/schedule\/2017\/03\/11\/save-our-children-that-sweet-sweet-pie-in-anita-bryants-face\"><span class=\"s2\">Society for Photographic Education National Conference<\/span> <\/a>on March 8-12. On the &#8220;Strategies of Resistance&#8221; panel, Triburgo discussed the Difference, Power, and Discrimination Academy at Oregon State University. He also presented his project, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lorenzotriburgo.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Policing Gender<\/span><\/a><b>,<\/b> in the context of historical LGBTQ activism in a panel called, <span class=\"s2\">&#8220;Save Our Children! That Sweet Sweet Pie in Anita Bryant&#8217;s Face<\/span>.&#8221; \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instructor and costume designer\u00a0<b>DeMara Cabrera<\/b> presented at the United States Institute for Theatre Technology Annual Conference, held March 8-11 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her talk, titled, \u201cPromoting Diversity in Costume Design Classes,\u201d was part of\u00a0a roundtable discussion on diversity and inclusion. DeMara was also be a guest artist for the session, \u201cWhat\u2019s Your Base Color: Teaching Multi-Ethnic Make-up Design.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Art instructor <strong>Anna<\/strong><b> Fidler&#8217;s<\/b> works on paper will be shown at Portland International Airport from March through August, 2017 in Concourse A, courtesy of Charles A. Hartman Fine Art in Portland.\u00a0Fidler also has numerous gallery exhibitions coming up beginning in June. \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In a disciplinary experiment between art and song<b>,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Andrew Myers<\/b>, art and <b>Lauren Servias<\/b>, music performed with former OSU visiting professor of voice <strong>Marc Callahan<\/strong> on Thurs., March 9 at the Corvallis Public Library. Accompanied by Servias, Callahan, a baritone, performed Schubert\u2019s, \u201cDie Winterreise\u201d while Myers live-illustrated. The work was also performed March 11 in the Hunt Center at the University of Portland, and March 13 at the Collier House at the University of Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Yuji Hiratsuka<\/b> and student printmakers are having a group show at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reynoldsgalleries.com\/\">Reynolds Galleries<\/a> in downtown Portland in March. The gallery is actually located inside of an optical store managed by art alumnus Yozef Yehudah. The show is a carbon copy of an OSU printmaker exhibition that took place in Kyoto, Japan last December. Also participating are OSU artists Vesper White and Angela Waetje. Reynolds Galleries is located at 314 SW 4<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Ave. in Portland, on the SE corner of Oak and 4<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Associate professor of music and coordinator of music education <b>Wesley Brewer <\/b>recently published a paper (with David Rickels at the University of Colorado at Boulder) titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/1057083717692380\">Facebook Band Director&#8217;s Group: Member Usage Behaviors and Perceived Satisfaction for Meeting Professional Development Needs<\/a>,\u201d in the Journal of Music Teacher Education. The paper explores some ways that music educators are using social media to improve their teaching methods and create communities of practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instructor of music\u00a0<b>Amy Hansen<\/b> joined <b>Corvallis-OSU Piano International<\/b> at their &#8220;Steinway Day&#8221; at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library on Saturday, March 18. Hansen emceed the children&#8217;s concert in addition to singing a &#8220;piano song,&#8221; and reading poetry for Saint-Saens&#8217; &#8220;Carnival of the Animals.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Professor of music and percussionist\u00a0<b>Bob Brudvig<\/b> collaborated with Instructor of music <b>Sean Paul Mills<\/b> at a recent Salem Philharmonia Orchestra concert set in a performance of Koppel&#8217;s \u201cConcerto No. 1\u201d for Marimba and Orchestra. Mills, who is artistic director and conductor of the ensemble, also lead the group in Antonin Dvorak&#8217;s &#8220;Czech Suite in D Major, Op. 39&#8221; and Johannes Brahms&#8217; \u201cSymphony No. 2 in D Major, op. 73.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Additionally, Mill<b>s<\/b> collaborated with instructor of music <b>Lauren Servias<\/b> and oboist Jaclyn LaRue at the inaugural performance of the Arioso Chamber Players on\u00a0Saturday, March 11 in Albany and\u00a0Sunday, March 12 in Corvallis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Instructor of music<b> Jay Chen<\/b> was an invited adjudicator at the West Linn School District solo and ensemble competition on March 4.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Instructor of music <b>Dana Reason<\/b> recently performed with New York City-based composer, drummer and recording artist Andrew Drury as part of the Red Room Series at Interzone in Corvallis.
