Je Suis Charlie?? Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism, and Satire —  The deadly attack on the staff of Charlie Hebdo and the murders at the Jewish supermarket reignited a debate in France and across Europe regarding Islam, immigration, and what it means to be a citizen. This panel discussion with OSU professors Dr. Michael Osborne, Dr. Anita Guerrini, Dr. Jonathan Katz and Dr. Kara Ritzheimer will attempt to explain and contextualize these debates and open a discussion about national identity in Europe today. 4 p.m., International Living and Learning Center, 155.

Wednesday, Jan. 21

Moore and McCabe to Perform “A Call to Life.” — Writer and philosopher Kathleen Dean Moore and concert pianist Rachelle McCabe will present a program in music and words, “In an Age of Extinction, A Call to Life,” 7:30 p.m. at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 NW Monroe St. Sponsored by the Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature, and the Written Word, and Friends of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library.

Governor’s talk — Governor John Kitzhaber will be speaking to a Corvallis campus audience at 5:30 p.m., in the Linus Pauling Science Center, Room 125. His talk will focus on the topic of equity. Following his discussion, students will be allowed a short question and answer period with the Governor. The discussion also will be live-streamed.

Thursday, Jan. 22

Composer and Pianist Jon Jang will be a guest in the Music 443 Composition Course from 2:00-3:50 p.m. in Room 204. Mr. Jang is a well-known and respected composer that blends asian instrumentation, western orchestra and jazz harmonic language. Students and faculty are welcome.

Je suis Charlie — A conversation with OSU French faculty about the terrorist attacks in Paris on January 7-9, 2015: What is Charlie Hebdo? Why was it targeted? What’s happening in France? 4-5 p.m., Bexell 412.

Disability Studies @ OSU — Join a group of OSU community members interested in discussing Disability Studies teaching and research, in general, and the development of a DS curriculum at OSU, in particular. 1 p.m. in Milam Hall 301.

Speech Communication Colloquium —  Dr. Robert Iltis will present “The Fatherland, 1914: George Viereck’s Battle for the Public Mind” from 4 – 5 p.m. in Shepard Hall 106. His work examines the martial and polarizing rhetoric in The Fatherland, a popular German-American-English publication, which tragically undermined neutrality  while calling for “fair play.”

Paths of Glory — Join us for an exclusive, big-screen showing of ‘Paths of Glory,’ Stanley Kubrik’s 1957 epic tale of corrupted leadership and the farce of legal proceedings during wartime, at the Whitsell Auditorium in the Portland Art Museum. The film will be followed by a brief talk and q&a discussion with Film Studies’ Jon Lewis, and assistant professor of history and ‘Citizenship & Crisis’ director Christopher McKnight Nichols. Admission is $9; $8 for museum members, students and seniors, but free for OSU students with a valid ID. 2 p.m., 1219 SW Park Avenue, Portland. News

The Disability and Social Interaction Lab, headed by assistant professor of psychology Kathleen Bogart, is hosting a table in the MU quad in honor of Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day (January 24). The lab’s project is called Look Beyond Face Value, and educates people about facial paralysis and encourages them to think about a variety of ways that people express themselves beyond their faces. The OSU community is invited to visit our table in the Memorial Union Quad January 20-23, 2015 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. to learn more about Moebius Syndrome, get a photo taken with a sign stating how you express yourself, and pick up a free Moebius Syndrome awareness wristband and infocard.

Elena Passarello, assistant professor of English, has been awarded Oregon Literary Arts’  2015  Leslie Bradshaw Fellowship in creative non-fiction.  She is one of only two recipients of fourteen outside the Portland area to receive a fellowship award.

Assistant Professor of English Rebecca Olson (School of Writing, Literature, and Film) has published the article “‘Too Gentle?’: Jealousy and Class in Othello,” in the Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies.

Assistant professor of English Megan Ward recently chaired and presented in a panel at the Modern Language Association conference. The panel was called “In Praise of Flatness,” and my paper was “Cybernetic Domesticity.”

Associate professor of German Sebastian Heiduschke recently published the article, “Inspiring and Educating GDR Women: Iris Gusner, Feminism, and the Film Kaskade Rückwärts.” Women in German Yearbook 30.
