Teaching at a Land Grant University: A Commitment to Local Knowledges, Dr. Adela C. Licona — The Center for Latino/a Studies and Engagement and the Difference, Power, and Discrimination Program present a lecture by Dr. Adela C. Licona, Associate Professor and Director of the Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English Program at the University of Arizona. This presentation addresses the establishment and the expressed mission and mandates of public universities in the United States through the granting of federal lands in order to more deeply consider their (missed) democratic potentials. In an attempt to animate the practice of “critical localism,” the presentation will draw from works relevant to Oregon’s environmental and human history, that integrate science and the humanities to consider how such works might invite multiple knowledges into a number of classes from those in environmental and social sciences to those teaching rhetoric, poetry, and writing. 12-2:30 p.m., MU 208. Lunch will be served.

Songs of the Season: A Special Music a la Carte. Today we take Music a la Carte to the First United Methodist Church, for a town and gown collaboration featuring University Chorale and the Corvallis Community Choir. Please do not bring lunch into the sanctuary for this concert. Conducted by Steven Zielke, OSU conducting students, and James Moursund. 12 p.m. Free.
Disability Studies @ OSU — Join a group of OSU community members interested in discussing disability studies teaching and research and the development of a DS curriculum at OSU. Rob Figueroa will present, “Autism and Environmental Identity: Challenging Self-Discovery, Empathy, and Justice.” 2 p.m., Milam 301.
Corvallis-OSU Symphony presents the Annual Holiday Concert. Bach, Cantata 142 ‘Unto Us a Child is Born,’ with OSU Choirs, holiday favorites, sing along, more. Art instructor Stephen Hayes was recently awarded a prestigious residency at the The Ucross Foundation Residency Program, in northeastern Wyoming, which offers “the gift of time and space to competitively selected individuals working in all artistic disciplines. Hayes will be heading to Ucross this coming summer.
A 2015 Spring-break study abroad program in Tunis offers students the unique opportunity to participate in “The World Social Forum” (WSF) to experience how issues of social justice are debated by local and international NGOs. Directed by Karim Hamdy (WLC/SLCS) and Laura Rice (SWLF, Emerita), the program includes encounters with host families and university students, and visits to Casbah, museums, and other landmarks. There is no language prerequisite for this program.
Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity
Susan Shaw, director of the School of Language, Culture and Society recently published “Reflective Faith,” a book and workbook set that strives to make feminist theology and biblical criticism accessible to laywomen.
Art professor Julie Green’s series “The Last Supper,” which depicts death row prisoners’ last meals, is highlighted in the fall/winter issue of the journal december, as well as in the 2014 edition of Ripley’s Believe it or Not. She will also be exhibiting “The Last Supper Series at the Dayton Art Institute in Ohio from Feb. 21 – April 12 2015, and at the Block Museum of Art at Nortwestern University in Chicago from May 8 – early August 2015.
