PILOT, NAB’s innovation initiative, announced the 12 finalists of its third annual PILOT Innovation Challenge. The competition recognizes creative ideas that leverage technological advances in the production, distribution and display of engaging content and provides winners with development support. A five-judge panel will select the top six from the 12 finalists. New Media Communications Associate Professor Daniel Faltesek has been named as one of these finalists. Faltesek’s project — “Big Processing, Local Impact” — provides local news organizations with robust computing and data science capacity.
Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity
Associate Professor Sebastian Heiduschke (SLCS and SWLF) just published “Women’s Interventions in the Contemporary German Film Industry” in “Camera Obscura 33.3” (December 2018).
Professor of English Richmond Barbour published the following: “Drama at Sea: A New Look at Shakespeare on the Dragon, 1607-08,” in “Travel & Drama in Early Modern England. The Journeying Play” (Cambridge University Press), co-authored with Bernhard Klein, University of Kent, Canterbury and “Desdemona and Mrs. Keeling,” in “Travel & Travail. Early Modern Women, English Drama, and the Wider World” (University of Nebraska Press).
Instructor of Music Kimary Fick performed on baroque recorder as a guest artist with the Early Music Ensemble at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon. The program titled “Occhi del mio Core” featured music from the 16th and 17th centuries. Performances were on Nov. 16 at the Hamersly Library in Monmouth and Nov. 18 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Salem.
Coordinator of Contemporary Music and Research Dana Reason was commissioned by Kino Lorber Films to create an original full length musical score for “Back to God’s Country.” The film is part of the “Pioneers First: Women Filmmakers” boxset that was released earlier this month by Kino Lorber. The film and soundtrack were presented at the Parkway Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland on Nov. 18.
Instructor of Music Ryan Biesack recently traveled to attend the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) from Nov. 15-17, where he sat on the drum set committee as a new member. While at PASIC, he also participated in workshops and trainings. Closer to home, Biescak and his trio (with Ben Mutschler and Steve Willis) performed jazz standards and original music at Bomb’s Away Café on Nov. 29. On Nov. 30, Biesack performed on the Bodin House Concert Series in Eugene with the Torrey Newhart Trio (Torrey Newahrt, piano and Todd Sickafoose, bass).
Assistant Professor of Music Technology Jason Fick had his anti-fracking composition “I’m the Expert” performed on Nov. 15 as part of the “Arts Now Presents: A and B and C” series at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Instructor of Music Michael Gamble’s recently composed the soundtrack for the film “You Shouldn’t Of” in collaboration with filmmaker Devin Febbroriello of Serpent Power Productions in Portland, Oregon. The short horror film was featured at the Glass Eye Pix“Creepy Christmas Film Festival” in New York City.
Professor of Art Julie Green was featured on PULS 4 TV Vienna, Austria on Nov. 11. The story includes “The Last Supper” and Green’s new series, “First Meal,” of exonerees after release from prison. Green also had a framed triptych included in the Disjecta Auction on Saturday, Nov. 17. The auction was a fundraiser for Disjecta Contemporary Art Center in Portland.

Reverence — As part of OSU150’s anniversary celebration, The Little Gallery proudly presents “Reverence,” an exhibition showing a selection of works from Ka’ila Farrell-Smith, Natalie Ball and Rick Bartow. 210 Kidder Hall, runs through December 13.
