Bexell Hall Landscape Input Sessions — Join the College of Liberal Arts and the award-winning Portland-based landscape architecture group Place for an information session on the upcoming exterior renovation to Bexell Hall’s landscape. Among many projects, Place’s landscape architects designed the “Elephant Lands” at the Oregon Zoo, as well as the Swarovski Crystal World park in Wattens, Austria. Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Instructor of Music Rebecca Jeffers was an invited adjudicator at the Lincoln County OMTA Ensemble Festival on November 4 in Newport, Oregon. Jeffers judged 20 duet-performances and selected two winners to advance to the OMTA State Ensemble Festival.

Instructor of Music Ann Kosanovic Brown was an invited guest bassoonist with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra in Anchorage, Alaska. The program included Richard Strauss’ “Tod und Verklarung,” Felix Mendelssohn’s “Fingal’s Cave Overture,” Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture” and Randall Craig Fleischer’s “Echoes.”

Instructor of Music Chris Bulgren recently presented at “The Beatles’ THE WHTE ALBUM: An International Symposium,” held at Monmouth University in New Jersey November 8-11. He presented his paper “From Rishikesh to Surrey and Everything in Between: The Confluence of Events that Fashioned The White Album” in a session titled “I Look at the World: The Beatles in/and Their Time.” Richard Lee from St. Bonaventure University also presented  his work “The White Album as Journalism” during the session.

Instructor of Music Ryan Biesack performed on drums with the Mike Denny Trio in Eugene on November 9. The trio (Mike Denny, guitar and Tyler Abbott, bass) performed original music by Biesack and others.

Coordinator of Contemporary Music and Research Dana Reason along with art faculty members Andrew Myers and Michael Boonstra and OSU student Paris Myers presented “Desert Translations: PLAYA” at Reynolds Gallery in Corvallis. Reason and Myers contributed the work “Desert Equations: Hand Action Study No. 1,” a site-specific work while residents at Playa in September.

On November 11, Director of Bands Chris Chapman conducted the Oregon Brass Society in a performance commemorating the 100^th anniversary of Armistice Day. The concert featured music representing the nations involved in World War I. Chapman is the music director of the Oregon Brass Society, the only British-style brass band in the state of Oregon.

Instructor of Music Amy Hansen performed at Lincoln Hall in Portland on November 16, where she presented a set of French art songs as part of the Portland State University “Poulenc: Music from the City of Light” series.

Bradley Boovy, School of Language, Culture, and Society, published “Belonging in Black and White: Race, Photography, and the Allure of Heimat in West German Gay Magazines from the 1950s” in “Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies.”

Associate Professor of History Christopher McKnight Nichols’ piece titled “We’re still haunted by our failure to grapple with the dark side of World War I” was featured in the Washington’s Post’s Made by History section. He also published a piece titled “100 years later, restrictions imposed during World War I are still with us” in the print and online Oregonian. On Nov. 13, he appeared on OPB’s Think Out Loud talking about WWI and the way it shaped the world we live in today. He also participated in a Midterm Elections panel mentioned in a Gazette Times article.

Daniel López-Cevallos, Associate Professor of Latinx Studies & Ethnic Studies, recently delivered the following peer-reviewed presentation: López-Cevallos DF, Flórez K, Derose KP (November 13, 2018). Religious involvement and medical mistrust among Latinos attending Pentecostal and Catholic churches in Long Beach, CA. Oral session presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association, San Diego, CA.
