CLA’s fifth annual Welcome BBQ for students and faculty will be hosted from 12 – 2 p.m., in People’s Park (on the west side of Gilkey Hall).

Saturday, Sept. 24

CLA will host its first Alumni Tailgate Party from 10 a.m. – noon, at Centro Cultural César Chávez. Please join us for bbq, breakfast food and drinks before the 12:30 p.m. kickoff of the Boise State game, and catch up with CLA alumni, faculty and students.

September 19-November 4 — The Little Gallery is pleased to present Eileen Hinckle: Drawn to Murals.  Ms. Hinckle, a past student of OSU’s  Arts and Communication’s JumpStart program,  undertook murals as an inspiring and dynamic form of public art that can interact and intertwine with architecture and environment.  As she traveled from Lima throughout Peru, and subsequently throughout Bolivia,  Chile and Argentina, the Hinkle  used art to connect her experiences to her surroundings and to engage in meaningful exchange with people she met along the way. Reception: Thursday, Sept. 29, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m., The Little Gallery, 210 Kidder Hall.

Nabil Boudra and Joseph Krause, both of SLCS, have been awarded a grant of $182,000 from the NEH to co-direct a three-week Summer Institute at OSU in 2017. The Institute, entitled, “Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia: The Voices of Women in Literature, Cinema and Other Arts since Independence,” will bring together six international scholars and twenty-five participants from US colleges and universities to explore the significance of women artists in North Africa since the early 1960s.

Trischa Goodnow, speech communication, was selected as an Open Delegate with the Guatemalan Human Rights Commission. In early August, she toured human rights organizations throughout Guatemala.

Art faculty Stephen Hayes’ recent exhibition at Elizabeth Leach Gallery, In the Hour Before, is reviewed in the current (September) edition of the national publication Art in America: http://www.artinamericamagazine.com/reviews/stephen-hayes/.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Associate Professor in the School of Language, Culture and Society Ron Mize presented “From Dog Whistle to Barking Dog Politics: Anticipating the Fallout of the 2016 Elections,” at Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) on a panel presentation entitled: “Don’t boo, Vote: La ruta hacia noviembre 2016,” August 16, 2016. Julia Bradshaw, art, has a piece in the SPE Combined Caucus Exhibition at Living Arts of Tulsa from September 2 to September 29, 2016, juried by Aline Smithson. http://livingarts.org/spe-combined-caucus-exhibition.

Over the summer, Michael Boonstra, art, participated in “Sequences and Solitude” a group exhibition at the World Forestry Center. The exhibition was a benefit for the Playa Artist Residency Program in Summer Lake, Ore. He also participated in the Portland Biennial Salon exhibition at Disjecta, http://portlandbiennial.org/salon/, and was a resident artist at Playa in late August through early September. http://playasummerlake.org/index.html.

Rebecca Jeffers and Angela Carlson, music, played a duet program on Friday, Aug. 26 in Portland.  The duo performed their four hands piano program in St. James Lutheran Church in Portland and again at St. Luke’s Episcopal in Vancouver.  They will perform their program in Corvallis at the Music a la Carte concert on September 30, at noon in the MU Lounge.   

Elizabeth Helman, theatre, is directing Lauren Gunderson’s feminist comedy, Revolutionists, for  the Oregon Contemporary Theatre in Eugene. The production runs Sept. 16 – Oct. 8. For tickets and more information visit: http://www.octheatre.org/.  

Shelley Jordon, art, presented three of her animations in New York for the 2016 SVA After School Special: School of Visual Arts Alumni Film and Animation Festival in mid-September. Two of her other animations were recently screened on OPB’s Oregon Lens Series.

Rachelle McCabe, music, presented A Call to Life: Variations on a Theme of Extinction, with Kathleen Dean Moore at the world congress of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on September 3. Their program has since been performed in Portland and Eugene; in Seattle; in Auburn, California; Tucson, Arizona; and Rockford, Illinois. It will be presented, with the addition of a panel talk by OSU scientists here in April as part of the SAC Presents series in conjunction with SPARK. 

In June, Jun Shin, graphic design, presented his work “Understanding of typography and its developmental method”, at Myongji College in Seoul, South Korea. Additionally, he has worked on the following:

• He is participating in the juried exhibition “Coexistence: Religious Harmony” Digital Art Gallery, Information Visualization 2016 and Computer Graphics, Imaging and Visualization 2016, running July 2016 through June 2017: http://www.graphicslink.co.uk/DART.htm.
• In August, he was a conference panelist for “Global Technology Planning Forum: Knowledge Service and Design” Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT), Korean-American Scientist and Engineers Association Annual Conference (KSEA, UKC2016) in Dallas, Texas.
• In August he also served as a consultant for creative design, publication and promotion design for the Korean-American Scientist and Engineers Association Annual Conference in Dallas, TX, Vienna, Virginia.
