Wednesday, June 1
U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio will deliver the annual Gov. Tom McCall Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m. in the Construction and Engineering Hall in the LaSells Stewart Center. His lecture, “The Future of Our Representative Democracy,” will discuss the challenges facing U.S. democracy from a variety of negative factors, including gerrymandering; special interest money; partisan polarization; voter apathy; and voter disenfranchisement. He will also discuss ways in which citizens can take action to safeguard the democracy and strengthen political institutions.

Anthropology Tan Sack Series — Adjunct professor of anthropology Margaret Mathewson will be speaking about the ways Western Native American tribes are documenting their own objects in museum collections to augment the information in their own Cultural Resource departments and museums. Dr. Mathewson has been hired by several Western tribes to study early basketry collections in Europe and Russia, with tribal members. They are currently working on a publication of the California materials there. Mathewson will talk about what the team found in the museum in her talk titled “Searching European and Russian Museums for the Earliest Western North American Collections,” which will be in 201 Waldo Hall at noon.

OSU students who are completing their bachelor of fine arts degrees will present their thesis work May 31 through June 12 in the Fairbanks Gallery. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will also be open from noon to 4 p.m. June 11 and June 12. The exhibits are free and open to the public.
Art faculty Anna Fidler will exhibit her work at Artworks CEI this month with an opening during the Corvallis Art Walk. The title of her exhibit is Telepathy Quilt and Two Stars, and runs from May 19 – June 10 at 408 SW Monroe Avenue|161, Corvallis.
Yuji Hiratsuka exhibit “Conversation Pieces,” The Little Gallery, 210 Kidder Hall. The artist, Yuji Hiratsuka is a professor of printmaking at Oregon State University. The show will run April 25-June 10. Gallery hours: M-F, 8-5 (closed during the lunch hour).
Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity
Professor Sharyn Clough of the School of History, Philosophy, and Religion and MA student Julio Orozco have co-authored an essay titled, “Scientific Sexism and Racism” that has just been published in the Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Gender and Sexuality Studies. Assistant Professor of Psychology Kathleen Bogart delivered the keynote speech at Pacific University’s Diversity Conference on May 30. Additionally, she recently published the following: Bogart, K. R., &; Hemmesch, A. R. (2016). Benefits of support conferences for parents of and people with Moebius syndrome. Stigma and Health, 1(2), 109-121. Her piece, “Facial expressions are the key to first impressions. What does that mean for people with facial paralysis?” also appeared in The Conversation and EconoTimes.
OSU Director of Bands Chris Chapman lead the semi-professional Portland Wind Symphony in a special Armed Forces Day Concert at Grant High School in Portland, Oregon on May 21. Joining the program was the Grant High School Concert Band, lead by OSU music alum Brian McFadden.
Music Outreach, Engagement and Recruitment Coordinator Sean Paul Mills concluded his 9th season with the Willamette Valley Symphony last weekend with performances of George Butterworth’s “On the Banks of Green Willow”, W.A. Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante for winds & orchestra”, and Antonin Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 6 in D Major” to packed houses in Albany and Corvallis. Up next is the 5th season finale of the Salem Philharmonia Orchestra on June 10 & 11 when it performs Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 6 – Pastoral”, Giuseppe Verdi’s “Nabucco Overture” and selections from “Tosca”, “Pagliacci”, and “Carmen” with professional tenor David Gustafson.
OSU music instructors Dana Reason, Ryan Biesack and Mike Gamble were joined by Ralph Carney (a saxophonist who has performed with Tom Waits, the B-52’s and Elvis Costello among others) in a Red Room concert at the Interzone Café in Corvallis on May 25. The Red Room series is dedicated to new experimental & improvisational music.
