Anthropology Tan Sack Series —  Dr. David Hoffman, Assoc. Prof. in the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures at Mississippi State University, will give a lecture on population growth in protected area (PA) buffer zones, which has long been of concern to conservation biologists and conservation NGOs, due to its potential impact on biodiversity. In a 2008 Science article, Hoffman analyzed the relationship between human migration and the resources available in these buffer zones. In this lecture, he will present findings from his six years of anthropological work measuring and modeling Costa Rican migration to the 10 Km buffer zones of three Costa Rican National Parks. The talk, entitled “Motivations and Movement: Modeling Costa Ricans’ Migration to National Park Edges,” will be in 201 Waldo Hall at noon.

On March 3rd, Dr. Chris Chapman (OSU Director of Bands) was inducted into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association in San Luis Obispo, California. Chapman is one of just a handful of conductors in the state’s history to be inducted. The organization was founded by Edwin Franko Goldman in 1929 and its storied inductees include: John Philip Sousa, Karl King, William D. Revelli and Henry Fillmore.

Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies Natchee Barnd was featured last week in an Oregonian video and article on tribal housing along the Columbia River and the broken agreements made in exchange for damming the river. Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Dr. Sandra Babb and Dr. Jason Gossett are presenting at the National Association for Music Education biennial research conference March 17-19 in Atlanta. Babb’s topic is “The effect of piano playing on pre-service teachers’ ability to detect errors in a choral performance,” (co-authored with Napoles, Bowers, Henkle and Zrust.) Gossett is presenting “Self-cultivations through teaching band: a case study.”

DeMara Cabrera, Instructor and Costume Designer in the Theatre Department, will be presenting on a panel titled “Building Diverse and Inclusive Environments into Our Programs” at the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) Annual Conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah  from March 16-19.
