Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Patti Lou Watkins in the School of Psychological Science has the lead article, “Fat Studies 101: Learning to Have Your Cake and Eat It Too,” in the June 2015 special issue on “fat” of Media/Culture Journal. The full article is available at the following link: http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/article/viewArticle/968.

David Kerr of the School of Psychological Science published a paper in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence entitled “Contextual risks linking parents’ adolescent marijuana use to offspring onset.” His analyses used three decades of longitudinal data on Oregon men. The data supported that parents’ marijuana use during their own adolescence predicted earlier onset of marijuana use in their offspring.

Chris Chapman, Director of Bands, was the invited artist/ clinician for the University of the Pacific’s Advanced Rehearsal Techniques workshop from June 19-22. Chapman was the instrumental conducting instructor, working with 14 high school and middle school band and orchestra directors in California and Nevada.

  • He also served as the conductor of the Northwest Band Camp’s Symphonic Band from June 22-27. The camp’s top band contained 56 of the finest high school band musicians in throughout the Northwest. The camp itself had over 240 high school and middle school students.
  • Additionally, Chapman was recently selected, through a year-long audition process, as the principal conductor and music director of the Portland Wind Symphony, a professional wind band in Portland. He begins his work as their conductor in the fall.
