John Marzluff: Welcome to Subirdia — In his fascinating new book, “Welcome to Subirdia,” author and scientist John Marzluff tells how birds, as well as other creatures, are adapting to the conditions of our increasingly developed world. Marzluff’s talk will be the kick-off event for the 2015 Campus Wild project. Thursday, April 2, 7 pm. LaSells Stewart Center, C&E auditorium. Free. Call for Papers — Oregon State students interested in participating in the upcoming Social Justice Conference that takes place during Holocaust Memorial Week are invited to submit a 200 word abstract to Philipp Kneis in the School of Public Policy by April 1. . This year’s topic is “Gender and Violence.”
The conference takes place over two days during Holocaust Memorial Week — Thursday, April 16 in the Journey Room at the Memorial Union, and Friday, April 17, in the Snell International Forum with break-out sessions in Waldo Hall. For more information: http://liberalarts.oregonstate.edu/sjc.

Creative Writing Professor Marjorie Sandor’s “The Uncanny Reader” (St. Martin’s Press, 2015) was recently reviewed at length by Rachel Pastan in the March 13, 2015 Los Angeles Review of Books. Sandor will read from The Uncanny Reader at Skylight Books with novelist Aimee Bender on March 28, 2015.

Distinguished Professor of English Jon Lewis was recently interviewed by the Society for Cinema Studies and Cinema Journal on a seminal essay he wrote in 2000 titled “How the Blacklist Saved Hollywood.” The essay has been selected as a Cinema Journal classic.

Awards and Honors

Assistant Professor of History Christopher McKnight Nichols has been awarded the Roger D. Bridges Distinguished Service Award from the Society for the History of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (SHGAPE). The award is given to no more than two members of the Society who have contributed especially valuable and distinguished service to the SHGAPE.

Assistant Director of Writing Sarah Jameson was recently selected to receive the University Outreach & Engagement Vice Provost Award for Excellence, Online Teaching Innovation: Credit-based.  She and other awardees will be recognized at the  O&E Awards for Excellence Luncheon, Monday, April 13.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Research conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Education Jason Silveira will appear in the next issue of the Journal of Research in Music Education. Silveira’s study entitled “Hazing in the College Marching Band” is the first nationwide research study examining incidents of hazing in this type of performance ensemble.
