Sigrid Schultz, the Chicago Tribune, and the Third Reich — David Milne, visiting scholar at the Center for the Humanities, is professor of Modern History at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. In this talk, he’ll discuss his new biography of Chicago Tribune journalist Sigrid Schultz, who worked as the first woman Bureau Chief in Berlin during the rise of Nazi Germany. 4pm, Autzen House.

Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series — Joan Truckenbrod is a pioneering digital artist. Recently her digital artwork was included in an exhibition titled “Programmed: Rules, Codes and Choreographies in Art from 1965 to 2018” and in the Digital Artwork Collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Social Justice Works Lecture: Artist, Activist and Executive Director of SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, Monica Simpson will share her experience using art for activism to create community-based social justice collaborations and health advocacy programs. An Evening with Jazz and Blues Guitarist Wayne Goins & Friends — Goins is a legendary guitarist, recording artist and author. He is the founder of Little Apple Records and a Distinguished Professor of Jazz Studies at Kansas State University. Goins will be joined by some of the mid-Valley’s favorite jazz artists: Joe Manis, saxophone; Sean Peterson, bass; Torrey Newhart, piano; and OSU Jazz Band Director Ryan Biesack, drums. Ignite Research Colloquium — “Arts, Humanities, and Social Science Research: Impact on Individuals, Communities, and Public Policy.” Enjoy a fun, informal afternoon with colleagues from the College of Education and the College of Public Health and Human Science. Each faculty member will be given two minutes to speak about their research passions and expertise to spark interdisciplinary conversations. This is a forum for faculty to meet each other in an informal venue. The Little Gallery — In 2017, Stefan Roloff created a 229-meter panorama called BEYOND THE WALL, on the original Berlin Wall. At the end of October, Roloff will transform the space of the Little Gallery and adapt the original Berlin exhibit to fit the walls of Kidder Hall. At the opening, Roloff will talk about his experience of growing up on the “island” of West Berlin, surrounded by the wall, and the way that experience has influenced his life and artistic concept. During his talk, the original footage of the 2017 exhibit will be screened. We hope you can join us! Monday, Oct. 28, 3-5 p.m., The Little Gallery.

Honors & Awards

We are delighted to announce that the History of Science Society has awarded the 2019 Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize to Michael A. Osborne, Professor of History of Science Emeritus. The award, funded by the Joseph H. Hazen Foundation, singled out his many outstanding “contributions to history of science programs around the world.” Additionally, Osborne will become President of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology in January, the same month he will be a visiting scholar at Colby College’s Science, Technology, and Society Program.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Instructor of Music Kimary Fick presented her paper “‘Immerse Oneself Entirely in the Spirit of the Author’: Taste, Character, and Expression in 18^th-Century Music,” at the 43^rd Annual German Studies Association Conference, held October 3-6 in Portland, Oregon.

Anna Fidler, instructor of art, was commissioned by Facebook to make a 27 ft. interior mural for their new building in Seattle. Facebook will make a video documenting her mural, which may be viewed on Instagram @fbairprogram and on Facebook at FB AIR Program in the coming months. Fidler also completed a limited edition risograph print for Class Set, an organization that asks artists to make a poster to be distributed to K-12 schools nation-wide as a pedagogical tool that can be used by students as a model to inspire their own creative work. Her work is currently on view at the Palo Alto Art Center as part of the exhibition, “Encounters: Honoring the Animal in Ourselves” which runs through December 29.

Instructor of German/World Languages and Cultures Benita Blessing has been appointed Director of Operations for the German Studies Association, the multi- and interdisciplinary association of over 2,000 international scholars in German, Austrian, and Swiss history, literature, culture studies, political science, and economics. Oregon State University co-sponsored its recent conference in Portland, the largest in GSA history with more than 1,400 participants.

SLCS Exhibit — The School of Language, Culture and Society presents, “Muxe: A Poem that Will Never Die,” a collaboration of photographer Richard Keis and poet Elvis Guerra, Oct. 7-Nov. 4. The exhibit honors gender-fluid members of Zapotec communities in Oaxaca. Opening reception is Wednesday, October 16, 4pm in Waldo 201. 

Fairbanks Gallery — Lucy Copper and Granite Calimpong, “Seeing is Deceiving.” Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. monthly on the third Thursday for the Corvallis Art Walk. Runs Oct. 7-30, Fairbanks Hall.

Giustina Gallery — My Secret Double: An International Exhibition. Join us for a unique, juried show from Pacific Northwest artists and a traveling exhibition from Latvia, Estonia and Kazakhstan. This immersive, collaborative show will demonstrate that depression, addiction and suicide are global issues, but not without hope. Runs Oct. 1-30, Giustina Gallery, LaSells Stewart Center.
