Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Associate Professor of Sociology Brett Burkhardt published “The Politics of Correctional Privatization in the United States” in the journal “Criminology & Public Policy.”

Adam Schwartz (Associate Professor, School of Language, Culture and Society) will spend Fall term 2019 as a visiting researcher at the Center for Language, Interaction & Culture, University of California, Los Angeles.

Benita Blessing, German instructor in World Languages and Cultures, recently published an article on children’s films behind the Berlin Wall, “Love Lessons in East German Children’s Films,” in “Colloquia Germanica: International Journal for German Studies.”

Associate Professor of Anthropology Kenny Maes and Applied Anthropology PhD candidate Yihenew Tesfaye published two co-authored articles on their work with unpaid women in Ethiopia’s Women’s Development Army: “Psychosocial distress among unpaid community health workers in rural Ethiopia” in “Social Science & Medicine,” and “Does volunteer community health work empower women?” in the journal “Health Policy & Planning.”

Sociology faculty member Hilary Boudet published a review on public perceptions of and responses to new energy technologies in “Nature Energy” and a co-authored piece on spatial discontinuities in support for hydraulic fracturing in “Society & Natural Resources.”

Sebastian Heiduschke, associate professor of German in World Languages and Cultures, just published “Der virtuelle Bachelor: Deutsch studieren online” about the Ecampus BA in German in “IDV-Magazin” 95 (June 2019). The “IDV-Magazin” is the main publication of the Internationaler Deutschlehrerinnen- und Deutschlehrerverband, an organization representing more than 250,000 German teachers in 85 countries.

Instructor of music Nathan Boal recently performed Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto for Saxophone in a reduction for piano and percussion, which is the first performance of the work in this configuration. Boal also performed the Dahl Concerto at the NW Regional North American Saxophone Association (NASA) conference. Boal’s corrected version of Jindrick Feld’s “Suite Rapsodica” was performed at the NASA region one conference by Hayden Harper. In addition to these performances, Boal also adjudicated at the OSAA State Solo Championship in late April.

Instructor of music Olin Hannum recently moderated a panel titled “Examining Student Leadership Models” at the College Band Director’s National Association conference. The panel included directors from the University of California – Berkeley, the University of Virginia and Oklahoma University.

Instructor of music Dana Reason’s recently composition “Dueling Ditties for Pointed Percussionists” was performed on Friday, May 24 in Ashland, Oregon by students from OSU, the University of Guanajuato in Mexico and Southern Oregon University. The program, “to South – Celebration de la hermandad,” was presented in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the partnership between Southern Oregon University and the University of Guanajuato.

The Little Gallery — Presents “Drawing in the Northern Light,” an exhibit of poems and photographs by Joseph Ohmann Krause, faculty in World Languages and Cultures. On view May 28-September 30, 210 Kidder Hall. The opening reception will take place Tuesday, June 4, 11:30 a.m.
