Ideologies and U.S. Foreign Policy International History Conference — This conference will include public forums, scholarly panels, and a keynote address, all confronting crucial issues in U.S. foreign policy, in both historical and contemporary contexts. The Hidden Hazard of Household Air Pollution in Rural China — In this presentation, University of Oslo Prof. Mette Halskov Hansen discusses the environmental and health risks of household air pollution (HAP) produced by the use of biomass for cooking and heating, an important problem in developing countries throughout the world. 12 p.m., 201A Waldo Hall.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Director of Performing Arts and Popular Music Bob Santelli will be speaking at the following conferences:

• May 31— National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Santelli will deliver the keynote speech, titled “Take Me Out to the Ball Game: Popular Music and National Past Time,” at the annual Baseball and American Culture conference in Cooperstown, New York
• June 10 — Santeilli will travel to the Nordic Music Conference, Trondheim, Norway, and deliver the keynote speech titled, “Saving Our Soul: Music Museums in Contemporary Music Culture”

Associate Professor of English Rebecca Olson received an Open Education Champion Award at the Open Educational Resources Symposium in Eugene on May 17. The award recognizes Olson’s “open pedagogy”: her students created the Open Oregon State textbook “Romeo and Juliet”(editingshakespeare.org).

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Stephanie Jenkins was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday where she discussed the first-ever academic conference on the band Phish.

Natalie Dollar, associate professor of speech communication, OSU-Cascades; Nicholas Dahl, instructor of speech communication, OSU-Cascades; Alexa Tawzer, undergraduate (junior) liberal studies, OSU-Cascades; and Nathan Goldberg, undergraduate (senior) social science, OSU-Cascades presented “Improvisational Communication Landscape: A Model for Understanding Deadheads and Phans, Jam Band Communities” at the Phish Studies Conference, OSU, May 18, 2019.

Assistant Professor of New Media Communications and Speech Communication Joshua Reeves was a commentator at the University of Oregon’s Critical Genealogies Workshop on May 10. Reeves also lectured on police and surveillance technologies at the University of Toronto’s Media Genealogy Workshop on May 18.

Instructor of Music History Kimary Fick presented her paper “Kenner at the Keyboard: Character and Expression in the Keyboard Music of C.P.E. Bach” at the fourth annual international conference “Historical Performance: Theory, Practice and Interdisciplinarity” at the Historical Performance Institute of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. The event is the premier international event concerning research on historical performing practices and brings together scholars and performers from around the world to present new research and consider emergent areas in historical performance practice.

The Little Gallery — Presents “Drawing in the Northern Light,” an exhibit of poems and photographs by Joseph Ohmann Krause, faculty in World Languages and Cultures. On view May 28-September 30, 210 Kidder Hall. The opening reception will take place Tuesday, June 4, 11:30 a.m.
