The Little Gallery —  Reception for “Celebrating Traditional Asian Dress and Culture.” The installation includes dress worn for ceremonial occasions and cultural objects, including a painting of bamboo by Zheng Yie, Bizen pottery from Okayama Prefecture, a Janggu ( drum)  for traditional Korean music, and traditional Korean masks. 2-4 p.m., 210 Kidder Hall.

White Nationalism, the Academy and the Nation — A interview and conversation with author and Pulitzer Prize winner Eli Saslow. Saslow is a regular contributor to “The Washington Post,” and most recently authored “Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist.” 4:30 p.m., LaSells Stewart Center, C & E Auditorium.

OSU Anthropology Lecture Series — David Meek, assistant professor in International Studies at the University of Oregon, will give a lecture titled, “Farmer Suicides and Food Sovereignty: Synthesizing Insights from the Political Ecologies of Health and Education.” Meek will speak from 12-12:50 p.m. in LINC Room 302. Speech Comm Colloquium Series — As part of the Winter Term Colloquium Instructor Panel, James Roberts, communication instructor, and Sarah Sheldrick, communication instructor/Ph.D. student, present their current research. James’ presentation focuses on how the application of judgment-swaying principles to decision-making is changing the rhetorical landscape. Sarah’s presentation focuses on the role of video as an education tool to foster cooperation in groundwater governance. 4-5 p.m., STAG 113.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Assistant Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences Sarah Dermody co-organized a preconference held on February 20 at the annual meeting for the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco in San Francisco called, “An Insider’s Guide to Conducting Tobacco Control Research and Interventions Among Sexual and Gender Minority Populations: Challenges Met and Unmet” with colleagues at Harvard University, University of California San Francisco, and University of Texas-Austin. She led the workshop focused on methods to examine intersectionality.

Dermody also chaired a symposium on February 21 at the annual meeting for the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco called, “Leveraging Epidemiological, Ecological, and Clinical Data To Improve Smoking Cessation Rates among Heavy Drinking Smokers” and presented original research on “The Time-Varying Effect of Alcohol Use on Cigarette Smoking Relapse Risk.”

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Stephanie Jenkins was interviewed about the “Philosophy School of Phish course,” upcoming OSU Phish Studies conference, and Public Philosophy Journal  “Phish and Philosophy” special issue for the JEMP Radio program “All Things Reconsidered.” The live interview aired Feb. 17 and will be available via online archive.

Instructor of Music Michael Gamble recently performed with the renowned drummer Matt Chamberlain at the Revival Drum Shop 10 year anniversary in Portland, Oregon. The performance included a surprise stand up comedy / music set by award winning actor Fred Armisen.

The Oregon State University Drumline under the direction of Olin Hannum and Justin Preece performed at the 2019 Nike Sneaker Ball. The formal event is hosted by the Nike Black Employee Network as part of their Black History Month events.

Instructor of Music Amy Hansen was an invited adjudicator at the OSAA District 14 solo and ensemble contest in Tualatin, Oregon.

Instructor of Guitar Cameron O’Connor was recently cited as an expert reference in an article about guitar building in the Bend Bulletin newspaper in Bend, Oregon.

Hansen and O’Connor will appear on a live studio performance at Portland All-Classical FM’s Thursday@Three program on March 7 at 3 p.m.

Coordinator of Contemporary Music and Research Dana Reason performed with the Re:Soundings Trio on Feb. 14 at Portland State University and Feb. 16 at Truckenbrod Gallery in Corvallis as part of the new “Site of Sound” series.  The ensemble performed Reason’s composition “Moments with Clara for Trio,” a work exploring the underrepresented voice of 19^th century composer Clara Schumann, and works by Roscoe Mitchell, a renowned jazz musician and founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The Re:Soundings Trio oboist Catherine Lee, composer and flutist John Savage, and Reason as composer, pianist and sound artist.

Instructor of Music Kimary Fick performed on traverso with the Oregon Bach Collegium on Sunday, Feb. 17 in a program of music by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, including the rarely perform cantata “L’isle de Delos.” The Oregon Bach Collegium is a Eugene-based performance organization dedicated to offering historically informed musical performances on period instruments.

Jun Bum Shin, assistant professor of graphic design, presented, “Comparison and analysis of readability (Legibility) of typefaces on traffic signs by country,” Sustainability and Social Good, Paris Design Summit, Paris, France, on Feb. 22.  https://www.designsummit.paris

John Whitten, art instructor, will participate in a panel discussion in conjunction with the exhibition “Surface/Interrupted.” Oregon College of Art and Craft, Hoffman Gallery. https://ocac.edu/galleries/hoffman-gallery Whitten has work in the three-person show there, running through March 1.
