Tuesday, Nov. 13

Veteran’s Day 100th Anniversary of the End of WWI: A Poetry and Literature Reading — This event will commemorate the end of WWI one hundred years ago. Faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students and members of the community will be reading the poetry of WWI and later war poets. 12 p.m. in Weniger Hall, Room 149.

SAC’s Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series — Presents “Material Motion,” a talk by artist and film director Eric Dyer at 7 p.m., with a pre-talk reception at 6 p.m. Both will be held in the LaSells Stewart Center. 

The Nature of Gratitude Show — Spring Creek Project will host the “Nature of Gratitude” at Old World Deli at 7 p.m. Local writers and artists, including Charles Goodrich, Tom Titus, Eric Allen, and Cassandra Robertson, will present poems, music, stories, and photography expressing gratitude. American Strings Series — Legendary punk rock icon John Doe will perform at 7:30 p.m. at The Majestic Theatre. Doe, a singer, songwriter, actor, poet and guitarist is the co-founder of the renowned Los Angeles punk band “X.” His most recent solo album is “The Westerner” and he is also the author of “Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk,” published in 2016. The audiobook version of the book was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.

Making Sense of the Midterm Elections — Panel discussion, 4 p.m., MU, La Raza, Room 208. Lightly catered.

SAC Visiting Artist — A professional artist talk by Phillip March Jones takes place on at 4 p.m., in Fairbanks Gallery of Art, Fairbanks Hall. Jones is a New York-based artist, writer and curator who has worked daily on a series of drawings, paintings, writings and collages in small workbooks that he carries with him. Some of his work will be on display in the exhibition “Workbooks,” Nov. 15 – Dec. 17 at CEI ArtWorks Gallery, 480 SW Monroe St., Corvallis.

SAC Presents — Child splay at 7:30 p.m. in the LaSells Stewart Center. Childsplay features virtuosic fiddling, Irish dance and renowned Irish vocalist, Karen Casey. Tickets are available at http://liberalarts.oregonstate.edu/SACpresents.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Horning Professor in the Humanities and Professor of History, Anita Guerrini, was awarded the Pfizer Prize for best scholarly book in the history of science at the History of Science Society meeting in Seattle.

Professor of Philosophy José-Antonio Orosco’s article entitled “Chicanx Existentialism as Liberation Philosophy” was published in the Fall 2018 Issue of the APA Newsletter for Hispanic/Latino Issues in Philosophy.

Instructor of Music Ryan Biesack and his Trio Untold’s self-titled PJCE Records release received a favorable review by Midwest Record, an entertainment review and news site. Trio Untold also received accolades from Bandcamp, where their latest album was listed under the “Best Jazz in October” category. Other well known artists receiving this distinction included Ben Wendell, Wayne Horovitz and Rudy Boyston.

Coordinator of Contemporary Music and Research Dana Reason was a featured artist and performer in “Propositional Worlds,” a SITE/Less art initiative in Chicago on October 26. Her work “Tea and Fences: A virtual tea party” published in “Propositional Attitudes” (ed. by Elana Mann and John Burtle, Golden Spike Press 2018) included a remotely projected performance with Ivan Manzanilla in Guanajuato, Mexico; Reason in Bend, Oregon, and a live audience in Chicago. Other artists included  Michael Workman, John Burtle, Elena Mann, Jose Santiago Perez, Udita Upadhyaya and Zephyr Dance.

Director of Piano Studies Rachelle McCabe and OSU emeritus professor Kathleen Dean Moore recently performed their program “A Call to Life: Variations on a Theme of Extinction” at notable locations across the country.  On November 1, the duo presented the work at the New York City Explorer’s Club in a benefit for the Safina Center. On November 2 they performed at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and on November 9 they presented the program at Black Mountain Circle in Point Reyes, California. “A Call to Life” addresses the crisis of global climate change through the music of Rachmaninoff and spoken word.

Instructor of Guitar Cameron O’Connor performed on November 10 with Oregon Symphony violinist Ryan Lee in a duo recital at the Casa della Zisa concert series in Portland, Oregon.  O’Connor and Lee also performed the program in Corvallis on November 6 as the inaugural concert of the “Guitar en Route” series.

Coordinator of Music Technology Jason Fick performed his composition “I’m the Expert” at the Electroacoustic Barndance Music Festival in Jacksonville, Florida on November 9. He also served as an invited panelist on November 10 in a session titled “Teaching Music Technology in Diverse Interdisciplinary Classrooms.”

Instructor of Music Amy Hansen coordinated the National Association of Teachers of Singing Music Theater Festival  at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon. Over 140 students attended the adjudication, which culminated in an honors recital for the winning performers on November 11.

Instructor of Art Michael Boonstra and Instructor of Art Andrew Myers attended, along with students, the State of the Coast conference in Coos Bay. They presented on their continuing efforts to integrate art and science through experiential learning, getting art students out of the classroom/studio and engaging with people and places. This was the fifth year establishing an ever-growing liberal arts presence at this conference.

Myers, Boonstra and Assistant Professor of Art Kerry Skarbakka, have work in an exhibition with students at the Newport Visual Arts Center. The exhibition, “Coast|Lines”, is comprised of work from their summer term marine related courses . This exhibition is a partnership of the OSU College of Liberal Arts and the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center. The exhibition is also a part of “For Freedoms—50 State Initiative,” a non-partisan, nationwide campaign to use art as a means of inspiring civic participation in advance of the 2018 mid-term elections. It is a featured project on the For Freedoms website.

Instructor of Art John Whitten has contributed an original piece of art to Disjecta Gallery’s 12^thAnnual Artist Auction, which takes place on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. It is a graphite drawing mounted with high visibility reflective flagging.

Instructor of Art Anna Fidler is the recipient of an Oregon Arts Commission Career Opportunity Grant in partnership with the Ford Family Foundation. The funds will support the production of a brochure of her artwork in conjunction with her upcoming exhibition at Johansson Projects in Oakland this winter. The brochure will include an essay by critically acclaimed author, Sarah Sentilles.
