Soundbox  OSU Woodshop Projects is hosting several exciting music/sound performances and immersive installations by current students, alumni and faculty. Each event promises to challenge common perceptions of music and sound in various ways. Some projects create new sounds by fusing familiar genres, while others blend sound with visual art. Plus, the interactive installation of “Spider Harp” by OSU College of Engineering students and faculty. June 4-8, Fairbanks Hall, Basement Room 004. CFP Humanities Research Clusters — The Center for Humanities invites proposals for the 2018-2019 Humanities Research Clusters. Supported through a partnership with the OSU Office of the Provost, this program offers scholars with expertise in different disciplines the opportunity to explore a topic of shared interest in common and in depth. Awards and Honors

The 4th Annual Oregon State University Flute Circle event, led by Jan Michael Looking Wolf, set a new world record with 590 confirmed participants on May 30. An estimated 555 were past and present students from the course. https://youtu.be/MIC9NXVn_BA

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity 

Juan Antonio Trujillo of the World Languages and Cultures program chaired a session on LGBTQI identities in virtual, mediated, and transnational spaces at the Latin American Studies Association conference in Barcelona where he presented a paper on queer Latinx online messaging around ethnic identity and desire called “Códigos de identidad y deseo: El lenguaje multimodal de los perfiles latinxs en redes geosociales gays.” He also led a roundtable discussion at PSU’s Queering Social Justice symposium featuring his latest experimental short film, “Topografías Eróticas” which explores the physical and emotional geographies of queer relationships.

Anita Guerrini, Horning Professor in the Humanities in the School of History, Philosophy and Religion, led a workshop session on “History and Restoration Ecology” at the annual Marine Biological Laboratory/Arizona State University History of Biology seminar on May 21.  The theme for this year’s week-long seminar, held at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, was “Engineering Nature.”

Associate Director of Bands Olin Hannum was an invited guest conductor of the San Francisco Bay-area based Awesome Orchestra Collective on their “Gustav Takeover” program, featuring Gustav Holst’s Suite No. 1 and Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony. Additionally, Hannum’s new work for wind band, “Rocky Mountain Sketches,” received its world premiere on May 31 in a performance by the OSU Wind Ensemble under the direction of OSU Director of Bands Chris Chapman.

Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator of Music Education Wes Brewer recently presented at the International Conference on Narrative Inquiry in Music Education in Boston, Massachusetts. The conference brought together scholars from the United States, Canada, Portugal, Norway, Italy and Abu Dhabi. His presentation focused on narratives of music teachers and students as portrayed in documentary film.

Recurring Events

Senior Thesis Art Show — Oregon State University students completing the Bachelor of Fine Arts this spring will present their thesis show in the Fairbanks Gallery of Art on the first floor of Fairbanks Hall, May 29-June 16. Ten students graduating from various art disciplines will be exhibiting. A reception will be held in the gallery on Wednesday, June 6 at 6 p.m., when Ed Feser, Provost, will present the President’s Award for Excellence in Art and the Provost’s Purchase Award and Larry Rodgers, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, will present the college of Liberal Arts Purchase Award. Seniors of Distinction Awards will also be presented to acknowledge outstanding graduating seniors in studio art, photography and art history.

Languages of NatureThe Little Gallery presents an exhibition by David Maddison and Renée Zangara. David Maddison is a Professor, the Endowed Chair of Integrative Biology at Oregon State University. He teaches Biological Illustration, along with other courses in Systematic Entomology and Computational Methods in Genomic Analysis. Renée Zangara is an artist from Portland, and is an active member of the regional art community. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is in many collections in the Portland Art Museum and was featured in “Portal,” the Portland Art Museum Magazine, Spring 2017. May 1 – June 14.
