The Nonprofit Opportunities Fair and Panel Discussions will take place in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Students can connect with local nonprofit and government agencies for internship, job, and volunteer positions. Presented by the Center for Civic Engagement and the Career Development Center. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Bedrock Lecture Series Screening — Jacqueline Patterson, Director of Environmental and Climate Justice at the NAACP will be speaking on “Organizing Across Movements: Advancing Systems Change Through Collective Visioning and Action.” 12 p.m., Bexell Hall 415.

Music à la Carte — The OSU Percussion Ensemble will perform in the Memorial Union Lounge at 12 p.m. 

School of Public Policy Brownbag Seminar Series — Todd Pugatch (Economics) will present “Improving Access and Quality in Early Childhood Development Programs: Experimental Evidence from The Gambia” at 12 p.m. in Bexell Hall 414. .

Visiting Writers Series — Award-winning novelist Chang-rae Lee will give a reading of his work. Lee is the author of five novels and a recipient of the American Book Award, the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, and the ALA Notable Book of the Year Award, among others. The reading will be followed by a Q&A and book signing, and is part of the School of Writing, Literature, and Film’s 2017-2018 Visiting Writers Series. 7:30 p.m., Valley Library Rotunda

Wages for Housework and #MeToo — Lecture by Silvia Federici, leading Marxist-feminist scholar. In this public talk, Federici will explore the possibilities for liberation in the moment of #MeToo and discuss the obstacles in the way for a successful social movement. Wednesday, February 14, 6 p.m., Milam Auditorium 026. 

The Story of Jane — Lecture by Dr. Quincy D. Newell. How does our understanding of American history change when we consider the life of Jane Maning James, a Connecticut-born African American who converted to Mormonism in the early 1840s? Dr. Newell, author of a biography of James, will discuss how James’s life adds depth to our histories of African Americans, women, the American West, and American religion. Dr. Newell is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Hamilton College and co-editor of “New Perspectives in Mormon Studies” (2013). Thursday, February 15, 4 p.m. MU, La Raza Room 208.

Be one of the few lucky students that get to go behind-the-scenes on a tour of OSU facilities along the Oregon coast on Saturday, Feb. 17. The tour is free, but space will fill up quickly. Dr. Qwo-Li Driskill, Associate Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, was a guest of the Center for Women & Gender at Utah State University on January 22nd. They delivered a brown bag lecture and facilitated a Theatre of the Oppressed workshop and public performance.

School of Writing, Literature, and Film Assistant Professor Ehren Helmut Pflugfelder has published a chapter on embodiment and recall documentation entitled “The Role of Metis in Revising Automotive Recall Letters,” in the collection “Posthuman Praxis in Technical Communication,” edited by Kristen R. Moore and Daniel Richards (Routledge, 2018). Pflugfelder also recently published a rethinking of failure in large-scale projects, “Failure Matters: Conflicting Techne in a High-Tech Case,” in the “Journal of Technical Writing and Communication” 48, no. 1 (2018).

Instructor of Music Ryan Biesack performed as a drummer on a debut show with a new jazz tri0 including OSU’s Ben Mutschler on saxophone and Steve Willis on guitar. They performed jazz standards and new, original compositions.

Assistant Professor of Music Technology Jason Fick recently served as the performance and composition adjudicator for the 2018 College Music Society Pacific Northwest Chapter Regional Conference, which will be held this April at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.

Instructor of Voice Nicola Nine attended and adjudicated at the Portland Cascade NATS chapter classical festival. Additionally, two of Nine’s students placed in the competition: Robbie Goldie in the upper mens category and Madi Zuro in the lower colleges women’s category. Competition categories are determined by age. Voice instructors Nick Larson and Megan Sand also had student place in the competition. Students from the studios of Nine, Larson and Sand also participated in an Alexander Technique workshop at OSU’s Benton Hall, facilitated by Eugene-based Marieke Schuurs.

Director of Choral Studies Steven Zielke guest conducted the Portland All-City Choir on January 30. The 80-member ensemble featured top singers from Portland Public Schools.

Instructor of Voice Amy Hansen recently facilitated the NATS Classical Auditions, held at the University of Portland on January 27. Additionally, on the day of the competition, she  entered and prepared scores which determined the winners of the competition. Hansen also recently presented a concert at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library with pianist Bryson Skaar. The performance was co-presented by the library and Corvallis-OSU Piano International.

Instructor of Guitar Cameron O’Connor was an invited guest artist of the Casa della Zisa concert series in Portland, where he performed a recital of classical and contemporary music.

Instructor of Music Sean Paul Mills recently adjudicated the Larry Garett Concerto Competition of the Salem Youth Symphony with Lance Inyoue of Lewis and Clark College, Mark Stanek and Brian Griffiths from Corban University and Dijana Ihas from Pacific University. Mills also performed two concerts with the Arioso Chamber Players in Corvallis and Albany. Both concerts featured the Chaminade Piano Trio No. 1 in g-minor and Beethoven’s “Ghost Trio.”

Director of Bands Chris Chapman recently served as guest conductor and clinician of the DePaul University Wind Ensemble during rehearsals at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois.

Director of the OSU Center for the Humanities and Associate Professor of the School of History, Philosophy, and Religions, Christopher McKnight Nichols was interviewed on KEZI about the State of the Union.

Associate Professor of Philosophy Allen Thompson was interviewed for an oral history project called Voice of a Warming Planet. The project features OSU faculty engaged with climate change research.
