SAC Presents “The Pianist of Willesden Lane” — Set in Vienna in 1938 and in London during the Blitzkrieg, The Pianist of Willesden Lane tells the true and inspirational story of Lisa Jura, a young Jewish musician whose dreams are interrupted by the Nazi regime. In this poignant show, Grammy-nominated pianist Mona Golabek performs some of the world’s most stunning music as she shares her mother’s riveting true story of survival. Director of bands Chris Chapman was an invited guest conductor at in mid-December for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania honor band. In addition to conducting that ensemble, Chapman worked with the IUP wind Ensemble and gave a masterclass for graduate conducting students. In December, Chapman also conducted the Portland Wind Symphony in their annual holiday concert at Marylhurst University near Portland, and lead the Oregon Brass Society in a performance on the Oregon coast. 

Instructor of guitar Cameron O’Connor performed a recital in Portland as part of the OSU Mirabella Concert Series with a program including his own original compositions, works by J.S. Bach, and Barrios. O’Connor then traveled to Los Angeles where he presented a duo-recital with pianist Hui Wu as part of the Brand Concert Series.

Instructor of music Sean Paul Mills conducted the Salem Philharmonia in performances on December 2 and 3 at the Chemeketa Community College Auditorium. Closer to Corvallis, Mills lead the Willamette Valley Symphony in performances on December 9 and 10. Mills is the artistic director and founder of both ensembles. 

Art professor Julie Green recently published “Phone Book,” reproductions of paintings of phones belonging to OSU students and faculty. Published by Upfor Gallery in Portland, “Phone Book” is available at the gallery and online at https://upforgallery.com/publications/julie-green-phone-book. Additionally, she recently received the Oregon Arts Commission Career Opportunity Grant, with additional support from Ford Family Foundation, to  publish an artist’s cookbook titled “Picnic Brownies Make Life Easy.” The book will be released in spring, 2018.

Art faculty Stephen Hayes’ work appears in a four person show at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, January 3-27, 2018. “Presence/Absence” features black and white artworks by Jason Vance Dickason, John David Forsgren, Stephen Hayes, and Jackson Pollock in styles ranging from abstraction to figuration. The group exhibition focuses on the artists’ use of minimal color palette to highlight distillations of gesture and form. http://www.elizabethleach.com/.
