Michael Kazin Lecture — Kazin, a history professor at Georgetown University, will lecture on the 100th anniversary of WWI. Kazin  is an expert in U.S. politics and social movements, 19th and 20th centuries. His book “American Dreamers: How the Left Changed a Nation”, was named a Best Book of 2011 by The New Republic, Newsweek/Daily Beast, and The Progressive. His most recent book, “War against War: The American Fight for Peace, 1914-1918.” 2 p.m., MU: Journey Room 104.

Wednesday, April 19

Toppling the Melting Pot – An American Conversations lecture by José-Antonio Orosco. In this talk based on his new book published by Indiana University Press, Orosco will discuss the Broadway origin of the “melting pot” metaphor, present the alternative to its assimilationist ethics proposed by 20th-century American Pragmatist philosophers, and imagine along with them what role immigrants should play in building a culturally pluralistic democracy today. 4 p.m., MU 208 – La Raza Room.

Thursday, April 20

OSU Music and the Corvallis Repertory Singers join forces to give the west coast premiere of David Maslanka’s Mass at 7:30 p.m. in The LaSells Stewart Center. Director of bands Chris Chapman leads the OSU Wind Ensemble, OSU Chamber Choir, Bella Voce, Corvallis Repertory Singers and soloists Amy Hansen and Nicolai Strommer in only the fifth complete performance of the work. David Maslanka, the composer, will be presents for the performance and will give a pre-concert talk at 6:50 p.m. in the Construction & Engineering Hall at The LaSells Stewart Center.

OSU Disability Network — Join a group of OSU community members interested in discussing disability studies teaching and research, in general, and the development of a DS curriculum at OSU, in particular. Noon-1 p.m. Milam Hall 301.

April 20 and 21

EdFest, a biennial festival that brings in panels of editors, publishers, agents and writers to address a range of topics related to professional development for emerging writers, will be held Thursday, April 20 and Friday, April 21 in Corvallis. This year’s events explore the theme of literary citizenship. EdFest is hosted by the MFA Program in Creative Writing in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film. Recurring Events

Oregon State University will host “Cultural Conversations,” an exhibition of prints from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Schnitzer Family Foundation, April 3 through May 3. Schnitzer, a Portland businessman, collector and philanthropist who owns one of the country’s largest private collections of contemporary prints and multiples, will provide remarks about the exhibition’s artists and artwork. OSU President Ed Ray also will give remarks. An informal, self-guided tour of the exhibition will follow. Pieces from the exhibit will be displayed in the Fairbanks Gallery as well as in four cultural centers on campus. The exhibition was curated by Kirsi Peltomäki, associate professor of art history at OSU.

The Little Gallery proudly presents Betty LaDuke’s “Bountiful Harvest and Border Crossings,” April 3 – June 16, with an opening reception on April 27, 3:30 -5:00 p.m., Kidder 213. LaDuke’s wood panel murals document and narrate stories of Latino farm workers who work on farms in Oregon’s Rogue Valley. For more  information: 541-737-2146

A delegation from the University of Aruba visiting OSU to further collaborations in research and education will give a  lecture on Monday, April 24 at 2 p.m. in MU 211. Questions and discussions will take place after the lecture.  All are welcome.

Associate Professor of History Christopher McKnight Nichols was recently named a distinguished lecturer by the Organization of American Historians (OAH).

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity 

Director of bands Chris Chapman was an invited clinician at two high schools in the Portland-metro area: Grant High School in Portland and Beaverton High School in Beaverton.

Joshua Reeves, New Media Communications and Speech Communications, presented a paper on suicide prevention technologies at the What Is Life Conference in Portland on April 7.  

Art professor Shelley Jordon has received a Ford Family Foundation Oregon Visual Artist Mid-career Residency Award for her artist residency at Playa, Summerville, Ore., summer 2017.
