Upcoming Events

Author reading — Fiction writers Jeff Fearnside and Jesse Donaldson will read from their respective books, “Making Love While Levitating Three Feet in the Air” and “The More They Disappear” on Friday, Jan. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Valley Library Rotunda.  The reading will be followed by a Q&A and book signing, and is part of the School of Writing, Literature, and Film’s 2016-2017 Literary Northwest Series.

Recurring Events

The Little Gallery will be presenting Source, a group exhibition of works featuring Liisa Rahkonen, Sandra Roumagoux, and Eliza Murphy – January 9 – February 17, with an opening on January 19, 3:30-5 p.m., 210 Kidder Hall. All are welcome. Source will present paintings, sculptures and box shrines that reference the sacredness of our rivers and coastal waters – the very source of life.

The Fairbanks Gallery at Oregon State University will host “Montage,” an exhibition of art and poetry by OSU students, Dec. 9 through Jan. 23. An artist’s talk and public reception will take place in the gallery at 5 p.m. on Jan. 19. The event is free and open to the public. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the third Thursday of each month for the Corvallis Arts Walk.

Awards and Honors

OSU’s 2016 opera production of The Blue Forest has been awarded second prize in its division at the National Opera Association’s annual college opera competition. The project was a collaboration among Marc Callahan, Andy Myers, Mike Harrison Gamble, Sara Robinson, Demara Cabrera and Lauren Servias and included students from the opera workshop course who sang the roles and created digital and lighting effects. Dr. Marc Callahan will accept the award at the NOA’s annual conference in Santa Barbara, CA, where he will also present a lecture on the use of Meisner technique in an opera workshop setting.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Yale Climate Connections — Hilary Boudet, Assistant Professor of Sociology/Public Policy, was featured on the Yale Climate Connection podcast discussing her work teaching Girl Scouts and their parents about energy-saving behaviors.

Art Professor Yuji Hiratsuka recently returned from Japan where he attended a Dec. 23 reception for a joint exhibition of work by the Kyoto Printmakers Group and Oregon State University art students at Batte La Saba gallery in Kyoto. The show opened on December 23 and closes January 15, and features work by OSU seniors Ariyon Kawai, Kiana McCurry, and junior Claire Moore; all students of Hiratsuka’s in the BFA program.
