Wednesday, Oct. 19

Agents of Change film screening: Join producer and filmmaker Abby Ginzberg for a screening of “Agents of Change,” which examines the story of racial conditions and resistance on college campuses, including Oregon State, throughout the turbulent 1960s. The film connects the dramatic events of that era with current social justice movements such as Black Lives Matter. 6 p.m., LInC. Artist Shoshanna Weinberger, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, will give a public talk at 7 p.m. as part of the School of Arts & Communication’s Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series. The talk, “Sometimes All of Me is not Enough,” will be held in Construction & Engineering Hall at The LaSells Stewart Center. A reception with the artist will be held before the lecture at 6 p.m. in the Myrtle Tree Alcove. The reception and talk are free and open to the public. Weinberger, a painter and sculptor, will speak about her personal history, the visual interests that inspire her studio practice and how stereotypes, adolescent memory, current culture and questions on the notions of politics and beauty influence her work.

Pizza and Politics — The U.G. Dubach Chair, Oregon State’s Political Science program and Pi Sigma Alpha present the third Presidential election debate. 6 p.m, LInC 174. Free.

Thursday, Oct. 20

Star Trek and Social Justice — Trek Theatre will perform the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode of “The Drumhead” at 7 p.m. in the Learning Innovation Center, Room 228. This classic episode is a story about the clash between state security and the protection of human rights. A costume reception will precede the performance, starting at 6 p.m. Attendees are invited to wear Star Trek themed costumes and prizes will be awarded to several participants. This event is part of SPARK: Arts+Science@OSU.

Friday, Oct. 21

Music a la Carte – Featuring Oregon State University music faculty and instructors in a showcase recital of chamber music for voice,  winds and percussion. Noon, OSU Memorial Union Lounge. Free.

Visiting Writers Series — Author Eileen Pollack will speak about “The Facts Behind the Fiction: Research and Creative Writing” at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Journey Room. At 7:30 p.m. she will speak about her 2015 book, “The Only Woman in the Room: Why Science is Still a Boy’s Club,” at the Valley Library Rotunda, followed by a Q&A and book signing. The book is based on Pollack’s own experience and six years of interviews with her former teachers and classmates, as well as dozens of other women who had dropped out before completing their degrees in science or found their careers less rewarding than they had hoped. This event is part of SPARK: Arts+Science@OSU.

Sept. 19-Nov. 4 — The Little Gallery is pleased to present Eileen Hinckle: Drawn to Murals.  Ms. Hinckle, a past student of OSU’s  Arts and Communication’s JumpStart program,  undertook murals as an inspiring and dynamic form of public art that can interact and intertwine with architecture and environment.  As she traveled from Lima throughout Peru, and subsequently throughout Bolivia,  Chile and Argentina, the Hinkle  used art to connect her experiences to her surroundings and to engage in meaningful exchange with people she met along the way. Reception: Thursday, Sept. 29, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m., The Little Gallery, 210 Kidder Hall.

Oct. 3 – Nov. 2 — Oregon State University’s Fairbanks Gallery will feature new work by art faculty Julia Bradshaw and Anna Fidler in an exhibition titled “Shapes and Séances.” Bradshaw, a photographic artist and Fidler, a painter, share an interest in using photographs as source material, in the fantastical landscape and in early abstract work by pioneering women artists. Sean Paul Mills, music, and the Salem Philharmonia will be opening the 2016-2017 Season on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22 with performances of Sibelius’ “Finlandia”, Lalo’s “Cello Concerto in d minor”, and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 4.” Mills will be presenting a free pre-concert talk on “Standing Between Two Giants – Beethoven’s 4^th Symphony.” The 2016-2017 Season is the 6^th season for the Salem Philharmonia (www.salemphil.org).

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Assistant Professor of Visualization in New Media Communications Amanda Tasse is premiering a series of evocative map visualizations for Lena Herzog’s installation Last Whispers at the British Museum Bloomsbury Festival, Oct. 19-23, and later at the Chicago Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art Cloisters, among others. Last Whispers weaves archival recordings of disappearing or extinct languages into a hybrid linguistics-art-sound composition that both celebrates and mourns the loss of these voices on our planet. 

Juan Antonio (Tony) Trujillo, SLCS, presented “Queering Spanish as a heritage language curricula & classrooms” with co-author Holly Cashman at the 45th annual meeting of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. Additionally, the  Oregon Latino writers collective Los Porteños recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a public reading and celebration at Portland’s Literary Arts. Readers included Trujillo and OSU graduate Octaviano Merecías-Cuevas.

Professor emerita in the School of Writing, Literature and Film Laura Rice presented Scheherazade and Sustainable Development, co-authored with Assistant Professor Mounira Hejaiej (Sultan Qaboos University, Oman), at a two day special seminar, Fatima Mernissi for Our Times, hosted by the Department of Women & Gender Studies, UC-Berkeley, October 7-8. In July, with Karim Hamdy, Instructor, School of World Languages and Cultures, and twelve others, she was invited to participate in the International Experts Workshop on Jobs for Tunisia, three days of roundtable discussions sponsored by the Maghreb Economic Forum (MEF) with funding from the BMW Foundation, the German Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IFA), and the Global Partners Project, Gammarth, Tunisia, July 27-30, 2016.

Director of Bands Chris Chapman, Director of Athletic Bands Olin Hannum and Marching Band Assistant Direcotor Jason Gossett hosted the OSU Bands 125th anniversary celebration from October 7-9 on the OSU campus. Guest conductors from around the country joined the OSU Wind Ensemble and The Spirit and Sound of OSU (the OSU Marching  Band) to give a performance on Sunday, October 9, where their program of musical works having important associations with the program and university. Additional events during the celebration included a historically-themed halftime show presented by The Spirit and Sound of OSU, historical retrospectives and presentations by band alumni, a banquet and more.
