Citizen Diplomacy in an Era of Nuclear Brinksmanship — In conjunction with the UN International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Peter Bergel will discuss peace, nuclear weapons and citizen diplomacy. Bergel has spent the last four decades working to bring peace and non-violence to the world. For many years he worked with Oregon Peaceworks as editor, program director and executive director. Visiting Writers Series — Valeria Luiselli, named a 2014 “5 under 35” promising writer by the National Book Foundation, will give a reading followed by a Q&A and book signing in the Valley Library Rotunda at 7:30 p.m. Luiselli’s work includes the essay collection “Papeles Falsos (Fake Papers),” and the novel “La Historia De Mis Dientes (The Story of my Teeth),” winner of the 2016 L.A. Times Book Prize for Fiction. NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

SAC Presents: The Kronos Quartet — San Francisco string quartet The Kronos Quartet will be at The LaSells Stewart Center at 7 p.m. Tickets: $50-$40-$30 all seats reserved. Sept. 26-28 — As part of Banned Books Week, the School of Writing, Literature, and Film and Valley Library will be hosting a Banned Books event on Monday September 26, Tuesday September 27, and Wednesday September 28, from 11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m., at the Brick Mall, in front of Strand Hall. OSU faculty, staff, and students are welcome to read excerpts from challenged or banned books. Sept. 19-Nov. 4 — The Little Gallery is pleased to present Eileen Hinckle: Drawn to Murals.  Ms. Hinckle, a past student of OSU’s  Arts and Communication’s JumpStart program,  undertook murals as an inspiring and dynamic form of public art that can interact and intertwine with architecture and environment.  As she traveled from Lima throughout Peru, and subsequently throughout Bolivia,  Chile and Argentina, the Hinkle  used art to connect her experiences to her surroundings and to engage in meaningful exchange with people she met along the way. Reception: Thursday, Sept. 29, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m., The Little Gallery, 210 Kidder Hall.

Oct. 3 – Nov. 2 — Oregon State University’s Fairbanks Gallery will feature new work by art faculty Julia Bradshaw and Anna Fidler in an exhibition titled “Shapes and Séances.” Bradshaw, a photographic artist and Fidler, a painter, share an interest in using photographs as source material, in the fantastical landscape and in early abstract work by pioneering women artists. Oct. 3 – 4 —  Auditions for Oregon State University Theatre’s fall 2016 production of Roald Dahl’s “James and the Giant Peach” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4 in the Withycombe Hall Main Stage theatre. The classic tale is told by James and the insect characters – Miss Spider, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybird and Earthworm. The play begins at the end of the story, when James and his friends are living in the giant peach stone in Central Park, New York.

News

Even Baden, art, is a finalist for the Betty Bowen Award administered by the Seattle Art Museum. The award honors a Northwest artist for their original, exceptional, and compelling work. Baden was selected as one of 5 finalists out of 446 applicants. The award will be formal presented in a celebration at the Seattle Art Museum on Nov. 10, which will also inaugurate the exhibition of the winning artist’s work.
