CLA This Week will not be published Jan. 11 and Jan. 18, 2016. Events taking place between Jan. 11-25 can be submitted for the Jan. 4 issue. Publication will resume on Jan. 25.

The Center for the Humanities is now accepting applications for the 2016-2017 Resident Research Fellowship Program. The deadline to submit proposals is Thursday January 14th, 2016. Awards and Honors

SCLS associate professor Sebastian Heiduschke was recently recognized by the American Association of Teachers of German his outstanding contributions to the teaching and learning of German in the U.S. Heiduschke and other 2015 awards recipients were recognized at a special presentation in conjunction with the AATG annual convention in San Diego, Calif.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Assistant Professor in the School of Writing, Literature and Film Mila Zuo’s short film, entitled “Carnal Orient,” was selected for the 2016 Slamdance International Film Festival in Park City, Utah for its world premiere in January. Zuo wrote, directed and produced the film.

Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies and Associate Director of Research with CL@SEDaniel López-Cevallos was recently selected to the first cohort of Leaders in Equitable Evaluation and Diversity (LEEAD), an initiative of The Annie E. Casey Foundation. LEEAD aims to develop talented, diverse thinkers and leaders who will improve the knowledge base and contribute to better science and social innovation in the field of evaluation, with a commitment to social justice and equity.

Four CLA faculty have recently been funded by the OSU Extended Campus Research Fellows Program:

• School of Psychological Sciences assistant professor Kathryn Becker-Blease will develop “Modules to Teach Scientific Literacy in Ecampus Introductory Psychology Classes” to help equalize basic scientific literacy skills for college students.  Her project will  and evaluate the effectiveness of the modules and disseminate them widely and freely.
• Assistant Professor of Philosophy Stephanie Jenkins will conduct research on: “Evaluating the Impact of Engaged Philosophy in the Online Classroom.” The aim of this project is to demonstrate how online teaching and learning can enhance philosophical education by creating opportunities for community engagement.
• A project by anthropology instructors Mary Nolan and Brenda Kellar titled, “Community in an online anthropology class: Friend or faux?” will research how universities can increase a sense of community among distance students, and thereby increase retention rates.

Music faculty Dr. Dana Reason (piano), Mike Gamble (guitar) and Douglas Detrick (trumpet/banjo and voice) as well as several other Portland-based musicians were recently represented in a live studio performance broadcast at 90.7 KBOO Radio on Monday Dec. 7. The show: A Different Nature: Whizbang was hosted, engineered and recorded by Alejandro Ceballos, Andy Hosch, Daniel Flessas, and Danielle Parks, among others. This was part of a fundraising effort for the station.
