Kenneth Runningcrane-Real will be speaking to the TA 360 Multicultural American Theater class at 1 p.m. in Withycombe 173. Real’s talk will include his experience with his mother hiding him from the “black robes” to protect him from the Indian Boarding Schools and Native American traditions. All are welcome.

Wednesday, Dec. 2

Oregon State University will host a conversation with Joan Didion biographer and OSU Professor emeritus Tracy Daugherty at 7:30 p.m. at the CH2M HILL Alumni Center. Daugherty’s latest book, “The Last Love Song,” is a biography of American author and journalist Didion. The book, which was published in August by St. Martin’s Press, debuted at No. 11 on the New York Times best-seller list for hardcover nonfiction. “The Last Love Song,” is the first printed biography about the reclusive Didion’s life and career, a narrative that traces her life from her youth in Sacramento to her marriage and partnership with her late husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, and beyond.

Anthropology Tan Sack Series — Oregon State Crop and Soil Science professor Patrick Hayes will present his research on what crop scientists are doing to cope with the effects of climate change. The presentation, entitled “Barley Breeding: Dealing with Climate Change while Contributing to Human Health and Happiness,” will be in 201 Waldo Hall at noon. Note: Liquid and solid samples may be available for sensory assessment at the lecture.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Brett Burkhardt, Assistant Professor in the School of Public Policy, presented his paper “Does the Public Sector Respond to Private Competition? An Analysis of Privatization and Prison Performance” at the annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology in Washington, D.C.

Anthropology professor Lisa Price has a new book titled “Ethnobiology of Coral and Coral Reefs” that will be released in early January by Springer.  The book is co-edited by Dr. Nemer Narchi  from the Centro de Estudios en Geografía Humana,El Colegio de Michoacán in Michoacán, México. The book represents a new angle of vision at the human-environment interface.  The book represents  the first ever compendium of human-coral interactions ever to be published making it a particularly unique contribution to ethnobiology.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Kathleen Bogart recently published the following: Bogart, K.R. (2015). “People are all about appearances”: A focus group of teenagers with Moebius syndrome. Journal of Health Psychology, 20, 1579-1588.

Gregg Walker, professor in speech communication and a member of the graduate faculty in water resources policy and management, was recently a guest on OPB radio’s “Think Out Loud” program. Walker talked about the upcoming climate change negotiations in Paris.

Art professor Julie Green, as part of the Pacific Northwest College of Art / Museum of Contemporary Craft MFA AC+D , will present a public lecture in Portland next week on her Oregon painting projects including The Last Supper: https://cal.pnca.edu/e/1513?s=20151201.
